Ekorael was a thief. Not a very good thief by any means; he spent much of his time dodging police or local authorities and angry victims, and much of the rest was spent trying to escape from jail cells. Nevertheless, he was a thief. Currently, he had a bit of a problem, however. And that was that he was trapped on a tiny ship 150 lightyears from the nearest inhabited planet. The ship was mostly dead and appeared deserted. He didn't know what had happened to its crew-he'd been hiding with the cargo, hoping not to be seen, when he heard several loud curses and thuds, then silence. It was hours before he gathered up the courage to see what was going on, risking being caught. He found the entire ship deserted and powerless. All lifeforms aside from himself had completely disappeared without a trace or explaination. It could be years before anyone came across it, and he'd surely be dead by then. Ekorael stared about at the lifeless walls. "This could put a bit of a damper on my escape plans..." He mumbled to himself. His beady black eyes scanned the deadened walls around him, pondering how to escape from the ship. There were no escape routes he could see, and as far as he knew, all the 'lifeboat' vessels were gone. He folded his arms across his chest and gritted his teeth irritatedly. "And there wasn't even anything of value on this stinking wreck!" Frustrated, he kicked the side of the ship, and it rocked back and forth. The lights would have flickered, except they were all already out, so Ekorael stumbled about in the dark, before bumping against one of the smooth metal walls. He held out his hands to steady himself as his black-ringed tail lashed back and forth. "Best not do that again, eh?" He said to himself as he grinned sheepishly. Ekorael made his way through the darkened hallways, keeping one hand on the wall to his side at any time. Suddenly, he stumbled, and fell down what felt like a long flight of stairs. He landed in a heap at the bottom, and climbed to his feet, groaning. He looked around him, and his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. He was in a large hull, dimly lit by something glowing from within baskets lining the walls. The area was mostly bare, except for a large pile of blankets and clothes laying on the floor on the far side of the room. He strode towards it cautiously. He nudged aside the blankets with his foot and gasped. Buried within the cloths were four or five creamy, mottled eggs, roughly twice the size of a chicken egg, though some were much larger or smaller than others. It appeared to be a forgotten clutch of eggs, though from what creature, he had no idea. A duo of chirps drew his attention away from the eggs a small green creature, about the length of his forearm, settled on the blankets, staring up at him curiously. The creature had smooth, emerald green skin, and its four paws ended in sharply clawed toes. It also had a pair of leathery, batlike wings extending from its back, pale green tinted with bright gold, and a long, lizard-like tail. All in all, it looked like a tiny dragon. The 'dragon' watched Ekorael with faceted, colorful eyes, seemingly benign. He stooped to pick up an egg, keeping his eyes on the creature warily, but it only began to hum contentedly. He grabbed all the eggs, stuffing them inside his jacket where it was soft and warm. He wasn't sure what the dragon-creature really was, but he was willing to bet that it was the mother of the eggs. The creature didn't seem to mind at all, but flitted over to him and settle on his shoulder, watching protectively. Ekorael shrugged. He figured the eggs might fetch some money, if he ever got off this blasted ship. Besides, they were kind of cute. If he managed to figure out how to tame them, he might just keep one for himself... He began to turn around, and jumped when he saw a second, larger creature sitting on the floor behind him. This one was obviously male, and his hide shone a dark bronze color in the dim light. It looked up at him and chirped curiously, and the green female on his shoulder chirped back. After a short conversation of chirps, the male seemed satisfied, and he jumped into the air, following behind Ekorael as he made his way up into the main area of the ship. The bronze flew ahead, and as an afterthought, Ekorael grabbed one of the strange glowing baskets from the wall to light his way. A light in the main halls, startled him, and he ducked into the shadows, closing the basket to extinguish his light. Someone else was on the ship! He was saved! The bronze dragon-creature chirped and flew straight to the two human-shaped figures standing at the far end of the hall. One of the reached up, and the dragon landed on the man's outstretched arm, who stroked the creature's head. His companion shook her head. "Where'd it come from? Fire lizards aren't normally space-going creatures, unless they belong to a world-hopping dragonrider..." Ekorael wasn't sure what a fire lizard or a dragonrider was, but he was more preoccupied with figuring out how to stow away on the strangers' ship without them noticing. He could worry about terminology later. It turned out to be easier than he thought. The pureblooded humans apparently had much worse eyesight in the dark than he did, and scarcely noticed him following behind them, as long as he was quiet. Once he had snuck onto the ship and hidden himself away belowdecks, the bronze and green 'dragons' reappeared and settled down on either side of him. He felt inside his jacket lining, making sure the eggs were safe, and settled down to wait. The woman shook her head one last time as they pulled away from the smaller ship. "Whatever happened, there doesn't seem to be any survivors left." Her male companion grunted and pointed out. "If there were, they'd undoubtedly have gotten away already. If we don't leave now, we'll never get to Star City Dragonry in time." With that, they both left, leaving the hull in darkness and silence. Hours later, Ekorael grimaced and stretched his stiffened muscles painfully. He hoped they would be arriving at this Star City place soon. His round, furry ears perked up as he felt the ship come to a stop, and he waited for the crewmembers to leave before standing up. The female green protested as she awakened by his standing up. Ekorael ignored her. During the long ride, the two fire lizards had refused to leave his side, and he had eventually given up and chose names for them. The female was called Darbi, and the bronze male was Sacun. Flicking his tail behind him, he stepped away from the ship, and his eyebrows raised in surprise. With all the odd-looking people in this place, he didn't stand out at all! Which he supposed was a good thing, considering his occupation and his method of getting here in the first place. He made his way into the main area of the space station, searching for a casual way of asking questions to find out more about how he was. He came to a sealed off area, and he tried to look in curiously, but didn't succeed. "Hey, what's in there?" He asked the nearest person walking by. "The dragon's nests." The woman replied. "Dragons?" Ekorael blinked, taken aback. "Yes, you know, sort of like you flits, only...bigger. Haven't you ever seen a dragon before?" She said, eyeing Darbi, who was currently curled around his neck. He looked down and shrugged, convincingly naive. "I'm afraid I haven't. I'm rather new here, you see." The woman cocked an eyebrow as she stared at him. "Well, you can always sign up to stand at the clutch. I'm sure you'll get a real good look at them then." The woman said with a smirk. Ekorael didn't know what she was talking about, but didn't argue. It couldn't be that bad, could it? |

The first time he attended a hatching, he was scared, confused, and shocked out of his wits. Ekorael hadn't found out much about dragons, especially how they hatched and bonded. So the first time he stood in the hatching bay and watched baby dragons break out of their shells, he half thought their first meal was going to be him. He was relieved when the dragons simply paired off with people, who took them back where there was, thankfully, raw meat laid out for the hatchlings. None of the hatchlings gave him so much as a glance, which he was quite content with. After that hatching, he'd made sure to find out more about these dragons before deciding whther or not to attend another hatching. After learning about how the baby dragons sought out a bondmate after hatching, Ekorael began to become intrigued. Curious, he gladly stood with the other candidates when the previously unannounced semi-zappy clutch hatched. One of the first eggs hatched into a lovely, light blue female. Her smooth hide was marked with faint, white lightning marks. The semi-zappy blue dashed around, teasing the candidates. Most of the potential bonders watched in confusion, until Ekorael began to see a familiar pattern in her movements. Bait, then dodge. Bait and flee, bait and flee... The raccoon anthro lunged out suddenly and caught the hatchling around her neck, surprising both her and himself. "Ha! Not going to get away this time!" She squawked, cursing at him mentally. What do you think you're doing? That's not fair! I call the shots, it's my job! She struggled for a moment longer, then reconsidered, and settled down in his arms. Well...Okay. You're not so bad, I guess... Ekorael grinned and picked up the dragon. Having just hatched, she was small and easy to carry, but she obviously wouldn't stay that way for long. Take me to the food now, Ekorael. She said in a haughty, impatient voice. The food tables weren't quite set up yet, but they arrived at them anyway and the little blue jumped out of Ekorael's arms eagerly. A tall, lupine creature stopped him. "Names...please." He coughed. Ekorael's dark eyes blinked. "I'm Ekorael and this is..." He pointed to where the dragonet had just been, but she was already gone, and he found her worrying over the attendants dishing out the food. The little blue looked over her shoulder at him. Hunmorin. I'm hungry, can't they hurry up? She added with a whine. Ekorael chuckled weakly. "Well, that's Hunmorin." He said as he joined her. |
