They were bringers of bad luck. At least, that was what the foolish humans believed. The humans in the nearby village were superstitious cowards. They blamed disasters on his kind, blizzards, floods, hurricanes, or earthquakes, even just a missing child. The humans regarded him and his family as monsters, things only to be destroyed. He was once called Sangai, a name given to him by his pack, his family. He lived with them, they ran through the forests together and hunted together. In sleep, he had lain by the side of his love, she with soft fur white as snow, and gentle blue eyes. She was called Migoto. It meant beautiful, and she was. He loved her, would have died for her, if only he had been given the chance. He sat with his family, singing songs to the ancestors in the sky at night, and in the day they laughed and played together. He had been happy once. Then the winter came, and with it, a fierce blizzard. He and his pack had been fine. They had long, thick fur to protect them from the cold, and wide, padded paws to keep their feet from sinking into the snow. But the humans had suffered greatly from the freezing cold and suffocating snow. In their simple way, they blamed the disaster on his kind, claiming them to be unnatural creatures, bringing death to their village. They did not understand him or his kind, so they tried to destroy them. They brought their weapons of steel and fire to their icy mountain. They hunted down his family and slew them. They callously murdered his brothers and sisters. And Migoto. He found her later, lying on her side in the snow. Pale blue eyes stared up at him lifelessly as her crimson blood sprayed the surrounding snow. Sitting beside her cold body in the powdery snow, he howled a mournful song to his lost love, his entire life lost. He wished the humans had killed him too, so that he could join his family and his love once more. Alas, the hunters never found him, though he wished for the sweet release their crashing fire would bring. Furious that he was to be cursed with a life he did not wish, when his love, Migoto, had been gifted with death, he swore revenge on the hunters that had ended the lives of his family. They had also ended his old life. No longer would he be called Sangai, the name his pack had given him at birth. He crafted a new name, in the humans' own tongue. A name that stood for the destruction and death that he had wrongly been blamed for. He was named Havoc. The humans had punished him unjustly, so he would bring justice to them by wreaking havoc on their village. With a howl, he leaped up, singing a song of cruel justice as he bounded to the humans' abode. The humans in the village heard his song, and shuddered. Forever after, they would tell tales of a ravaging yeti-wolf, that attacked unwary travelers and howled bone-chillingly in the night. Cold nights became colder days as weeks passed, then years. The seasons flew by, but Havoc paid no heed, aware only that his thirst for blood and vengeance had not yet been abated. Somewhere in his mind, he sensed that a thousand years would not have been enough. But he didn't care. He would continue to carry out his revenge until he dropped to the ground in exhaustion. Possibly then he would once again see Migoto's bright eyes staring at him from a dark face. He longed for death, for a release from his lonely prison of life. He longed to see his family, his own kind, and once again run with them through the forests, wild and carefree. But the warm comfort of oblivion was not to be his. There came a day when the village was deserted, all the humans fled. Only one lone human stood in the deserted square, one who obviously did not belong. His long black hair was tossed about by a freezing wind, but he seemed not to notice as he stood silently, a cold smile on his face. Havoc regarded him coolly. He was only one man, he posed no danger. A giant figure melted out of the shadows, forming into a huge gray and white beast as both of its reptilian heads stared at him hungrily. Havoc's heart leapt. Here his life would end, finally. At last, he would meet his love again, and they would not part. He waited for the inevitable roar that would accompany his end. He would die alone, as he had lived for far too long. Finally, the human stirred, and held up a hand silently as he glanced at the creature. Surprisingly, the creature backed away, lowering its heads and even allowing the man to stroke one. Almost curiously, Havoc regarded the two with crimson eyes. If they would not bring his death, then what did they want with him? What could they possibly offer, besides death? A new life. A wonderful, deep voice answered his unspoken query. And a second chance, if you come with us to Cy Dragonstake. A second, lighter voice spoke without words. He didn't believe them. How could he live his life fully once again? His family was dead, and Migoto... The dragon soon grew impatient with his distrust. There is a hatchling waiting for you on the black sands. He growled impatiently. Are you coming or not? A hatchling? Waiting for him? A beautiful creature, like the one in front of him now, would almost be worth living for... |
