Kenin hissed sharply as Leyaa snapped at his hand impatiently. He sat up. He must have dozed off by the lake, because he was outside, but nobody else was around. He frowned. It was only midday, there should have been people and dragons outside.
Leyaa creeled again agitatedly, which drew the boy's attention to the unearthly keening hum that was beginning to reverbrate throught the Weyr. That made him sit up. The dragons hummed when the clutch was hatching!
He jumped up and raced off to the hatching sands, where he met his younger foster brother, Amiculi. The other boy gave him a nervous smile, which he returned with an overconfidant grin. He didn't feel in the least confident about standing, though he was excited at the thought of Impressing. Though he was secretly hoping for a bronze, he knew the chances were much more likely that he'd Impress a blue or green, which he supposed would be just as good.
"Hey Amiculi." He said to the younger boy. "What do you think you'll Impress?"
His foster brother shrugged. "I don't know, probably a blue or something."
Kenin smirked, but his attention was drawn to the eggs as the first two dragons hatched. A bronze and a swirl-patterned green spilled onto the sands, and kenin's eyes were locked on the bronze hopefully, but the dragon ignored him. So did the next eight dragons to hatch.
By now only three eggs were left rocking, and his grin behind to fade. Two of the eggs yeilded greens, though all the female candidates had Impressed already. The first green trotted up to Amiculi immediately, and began to bombard him with thoughts of hunger. He laughed as he lead the green, Kenin had heard him call her Fallenath, to the food.
The blue dragon went to the other candidate, which meant that the only dragon left was the green, who was now prowling around the sands like a wild feline. Kenin watched her amusedly as Visionth circled around him. "What are you doing, Visionth?" He asked, as a grin began to creep onto his face.
All the others had something, or did something special, I didn't want to be the odd one out. Visionth explained perplexedly.
Kenin chuckled and regarded his dragon. "Well, if everyone else did something special, then wouldn't yours have been special if you had done nothing but hatch?"
Visionth's eyes whirled.
Of course not. Then I wouldn't have Impressed you!
