Henri Christophe was born in St. Kitts on 06/10/1767 and was brought to Saint Domingue (Haiti) as a slave. He worked in a hotel restaurant and later obtained his freedom. Christophe was a career officer and general in the Haïtian Army. In 1806 he participated in the coup d'etat against Jean-Jacques Dessalines (see P237As) and seized control of northern Haïti. His chief rival was his co-conspirator, Alexandre Pétion, who championed a republican form of government and controlled the south of the country. He became President of the State of Haïti on 17/02/1807. He was proclaimed King of Haïti on 26/03/1811. He later became unpopular, ill and infirm, although only fifty three, on 08/10/1820, he committed suicide by shoot himself with a silver bullet through his heart rather than face the possibility of a coup. Pierre Nord Alexis, President of Haiti from 1902-1908, was his grandson. |
