Note issued commemorating 60th year of the creation of Israel 1948-2008
Obverse Moshe Sharett (Shertok) was born in Kherson Ukraine on 15.10.1894 and emigrated to Palestine in 1908. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Herzliya Hebrew High School and also studied in Ottoman Istanbul and London School of Econimics. During the first World War he served in the Ottoman army as a junior officer.

Moshe Sharett speak fluently in Arabic and was employed as an official within the nascent Histadrut labour union. From 1933 to 1948, he was involved in the negotiations between the Zionist movement and the British Mandate of Palestine which later let to the creation of Israel.

Following the creation of Israel in 1948, Moshe Sharett became the Foreign Minister. In January 1954 Sharett became the second Prime Minister following the retirement of David Ben-Gurion. However due to various problems and lack of support in his government and his Mapai party, he was later replaced as Prime Minister by David Ben-Gurion in 1955.

Moshe Sharett continued to serve in the government and in 1956 became the Foreign Minister, and then the Chairman of the Jewish Agency from 1961 until his death on 7.7.1965, aged 70. He was also a member of the Knesset until his death.
