Morelos, an Afro-Mexican, was born in Morelia (then known as "Valladolid") on 30/09/1765. In 1798, at the age of 33, he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. In 1810, he joined the rebellion against Spain and took over the leader of the revolution following the captured and execution of their leader Miguel Hidalgo. Under his leadership, he fought against the Spanish army and was captured and shot as a traitor at the village of San Cristóbal Ecatepec on 22/12/1815. Morelos is considered as one of the early leaders that fought against Spain for independence.

In Mexico today, José María Morelos is a national hero and have city and state named in his honour. During WWII, the United States liberty ship SS Jose M. Morelos was named after him.
