I've lost count of the variations on this theme, from Banishing rituals to Centrings, but any worthwhile activity requires preparation. We tailor to our own requirements the warm-up exercises of magic, the mental rehearsal, the provision of equipment space and time, on the understanding that Proper Prior Preparation and Practice Prevents Piss-Poor Performance. I therefore offer this one method, which, as it says on the tin, provides an axis, a pivot-point, a base gridline, of our map of the world, and places the Magician squarely at Point Zero.
Stand upright, take a breath, let it out as an 'OOH' sound, pitched deeply enough to create a sensation all the way down to the genitalia. Visualise a pentacle beneath your feet and think of Earth.
Another breath, this time let out as an 'O' sound, as in 'awe, pitched deeply enough to create a sensation in your abdomen, right behind the belly button. Visualise a wand there and think of Fire.
Another breath, this time let out as an 'Aah' sound, pitched so as to create a sensation throughout the chest. Visualise a chalice there and think of Water.
Another breath, this time let out as an 'EH' sound, as in 'air', pitched high enough to create a sensation in the throat and sinuses. Visualise a sword there and think of Air.
Another breath, this time let out as an 'EEE' sound, pitched so high it makes your head ring. Visualise a lamp above your head and think of Spirit.
Run this sequence forwards and backwards as seems fitting, becoming more aware of the space around you, behind, above, below. Gesture, project your voice, anything. Now visualise your octarine forming in this space as a mist or field, absorb it and with it take on your Magician self using any means that work for you. Announcing your magical name, using costume, props, stance, tone of voice, words and gestures planned or spontaneous. Become the Magician at the Axis Mundi.
You may wish to follow up by invoking the rest of the Eight Powers, perhaps like this. |

Try this: an NLP technique usually used to 'blow out' unpleasant feelings or patterns.
Think of the 'orrible thing that's been bothering you: picture it, hear the sounds, make the representation full and complete. Make the picture bigger and bring it closer and turn up the brightness and colour ... and bigger ... and closer ... and so on ... and louder ... and louder ... and more ... keep this up until the feeling that you had becomes so incredibly intense that ... you keep making the representation bigger, closer, brighter, louder, fuller ... YOU MUST KEEP GOING FOR THIS TO WORK! ... and keep cranking it up and up and up until something goes 'pop!' and it's as though the whole thing exploded and you can't get it back anymore.
Typically, at this point, you start to laugh, and you just can't take those old feelings seriously anymore. They went.
So what? This means that you can use things like representations of murder war and violence, however unpleasant you found them, and take them lightly without having to 'find' reasons for doing so. And the laughter becomes the effect, not the cause, of the banishing of the feeling.
THE BANISHING RITUAL OF P'TUI. For preference, use at the end of rituals.
Face your nominal East. Stand squarely, and raise your hand, palm facing inwards, fist closed, middle digit extended upwards, timed with the solemn vibration of the Sacred Syllable of P'Tui -- i.e. a huge blurting upwardly-inflected raspberry.
Lower arm and turn to the next quarter. Repeat to all four quarters.
Having done this, vibrate the the Word of Closing: "ARSEHOLES"
So mote it be. Great way to end a ritual. |
