Chapter 1
However did it come to this....
I stood over his limp, cold body, breathing hard, wondering what I had just done. The harsh wind swept through my tangled hair and I licked my lips, trying to find some sort of liable excuse to my crime.
I moved back a little and tripped over a loose stone, falling onto the cold ground with a grunt. Suddenly, blinding lights and sirens illuminated the air about me and I couldn't think straight. 'What's happening?' I inquired inside my cloudy mind. I hid my head in my hands and began to pray...
Five years later...
"Oh, please, Nick, get off of it already," Aj groaned, tossing a pillow in his friend Nick Carter's general direction. However, it failed to land anywhere on him.
"All I'm saying is that I don't get how she could possibly beat me, the king of Mortal Kombat," Nick whined, snatching up the pillow and throwing it back, not much better of an aim than Aj was.
The door opened and both guys turned to see Susan Pavora, their road manager, enter the room, bearing a grim expression on her usually pleasant face. Aj noticed immediately and inquired, "What's the matter, Sus?"
Susan removed her glasses and sunk into the couch slowly. Tears welled silently into her brown eyes and a few managed to slide their way down her smooth cheeks. She wiped them away quickly and said, in a quiet tone, "My daughter is returning from Greenwich."
Nick's eyes were filled with curiousity, and he asked, "Greenwich? Isn't that a---"
"Prison, yes." Susan sat back and sighed. "She was placed there five years ago. Well, it's more of a juvenile hall, but same difference. All the same, cold cement and bars withholding people who have done crimes."
"How come you never spoke of this before, Sus?" Aj wondered, placing a gentle arm about her frail shoulders. "You're like our surrogate mother, and you know you can trust us."
Susan pursed her lips and nodded. "I'm aware, Aj. But, Sera's placement in a--a reformatory is difficult for me to accept sometimes. It's hard for me to talk about it to anyone..."
"I understand," Aj replied. "We understand. And we won't tell the others if you feel it---"
"No, they're going to know anyway." Susan's eyes wandered from Aj to Nick, as they looked on in awe. "She's coming home, like I said, and with you guys going on tour and all. Well, she's going to have to come along. I mean, I am your road manager, and it's obvious that I cannot postpone this tour any longer. I can't leave you hanging, and I can't leave her alone, so she's going to join us on the road."
Aj and Nick were speechless for a moment before Aj spoke up. "Don't worry, Sus, we'll take good care of your daughter." But, Aj thought that bringing a criminal on the road wasn't going to be easy...
