Chapter 2

"She fell of the bed?"A.J. asked.

"She fell of the bed."

"Is your breath that bad?" he joked.

"Come on man."Howie pleaded. A.J. saw his friend's usually joking counteneace change to serious.

"Well, Howie...there is the possibility she doesn't see you as anything but a friend...I mean I don't know but from what I understand she was quite surprised by your comment...or..."

"Or what?"

"Your breath really is that bad." A.J. laughed. Howie and A.J. were waiting in Sunday's slow traffic on the way to A.J.'s girlfriend Bren's house. Howie had not originally not been on the guest list but he had called frantically asking A.J. to pick him up from Katherine's house. Howie looked over and saw Jessica, Katherine's best friend in the car next to them.

"HEY, JESSICA!" Howie yelled as he rolled down the window.

"Jessica was quite embarrassed by Howie's yelling. "Oh...hey how's it going?"

"PRETTY GOOD!"

"Man, don't yell we're in the same state." A.J. warned.

"Sorry, just want to know if she has heard from Katherine because I haven't."

"WHERE'S KATHERINE?"

"Geez, Howie haven't seen her." Jessica had just told a bold face lie to one of the sweetest guys on the planet but she had to. Katherine had been freaking out since Howie had remotely suggested he and Katherine date. Now it was up to Jessica to keep her best friend's whereabouts secret. Katherine wanted time to figure out how to deal with the situation and Jessica was going to give it to her. Traffic began to move and Jessica quickly turned her black Neon onto a short road and anxiously looked in her rearview mirror waiting for A.J.'s car to turn in but it didn't. WHEW!. Jessica's cell phone rang startling her. She collected herself and answered.

"House of Beauty, this is cutie."

"So you haven't seen her?" Damn that boy didn't quit.

"Uh...,"Jessica began blowing loudly into the phone. "Oh...no... I'm roaming and the connection's bad... got to go!" Jessica quickly unplugged her cell and cautiously pulled out of the small street and headed towards Katherine's house.

"Goodness, anyone know who she is?" a voice asked.

"Nope, but she looks pasty!" am elderly woman's voice stated.

Jennifer knew there were three things wrong with the current situation she was in. One--she was on the ground. Two--her head was throbbing. Three-Jennifer could tell there were about 20 people staring at Jennifer laying on the ground with her head throbbing.

"She's okay!" A small voice pushed through the crowd. Jennifer opened her eyes slowly and saw Erin smiling at her.

"Boy, you look bad." Erin helped her sister up slowly.

"Did I ask you to speak?" Jennifer slurred. About 20 people had gathered to watch Jennifer lay unconscious in the dirt beside the bleacher.

"What happened?" Jennifer asked.

"Well...", it was Devil a.k.a. Angel "When those people were yelling move you didn't and a baseball from the field besides us came down and knocked you out."

Jennifer swayed and arms from behind caught her before she fell. It was the blonde guy.

"Had quite a day haven't you?"

Drool began to form at the corners of Jennifer's mouth but this time she was determined not to be an idiot in front of him. She pulled herself straight up and turned around to face this handsome man. Jennifer had a clever remark to say this time but before she could a wave of dizziness came over and she fell back in the dirt.

"Wow! this is a record for fainting...twice... well not really a record because she passed out about three times after we got off of Space Mountain."

Erin said as several fathers helped carry Jennifer's limp body to the first aid stand.

Kotex, Stay-free, or O.B.. Decisions, decisions, decisions, thought Kate Rouse. Her mind was actually still reeling from her encounter with that dark-haired guy. Who was he? Unknowingly to Kate, a past shopper had dropped a rather large box of Kotex tampons in the floor. As Katherine began to walk her foot kicked the box out of the aisle and right in front of the Roman God.

"Will someone please just shoot me?" Kate thought.

The dark stranger smiled and picked up the box.

"Thanks....um...name...I know not." Was she dyslexic?

"Since we seem to be running into each other so often we better know each other's names," he said," I'm Kevin."

"Hi...I'm Kate." she said quietly.

"Chate. That is an interesting name. Is it French?"

"No, it's KATE.. Kate...just Kate." Where is the firing squad when you really need them? Kate thought angrily.

"Well, Kate.. Might I say that your eyes are very nice."

"Thanks..." Kate answered.

Kevin peered into her basket.

"Spaghetti, my favorite."

Silence.

"Oh, yeah mine too,,,maybe I can cook you some sometime." Where did that courage come from? Kate wondered.

"I would enjoy that." Kevin smiled.

Bren and her best friend Kimi sat looking despairingly at the phone.

"The boxers have to be at her house otherwise she wouldn't have known all that detail." Bren stated angrily.

"Well, you know how low A.J.'s pants hang...anybody around him could see his boxers." Kimi tried to cheer up her friend.

"The blue boats don't start to around the you know-where area." Bren knew this because she had bought the darn things herself.

"Confront him about it and see what he says." Kimi stated.

"How?" Bran asked.

"Well, don't do it Jerry Springer style and throw a chair but just ask him if he's been over there." Kimi said.

"And then what?...ask him if his underwear accidentally fell off."

"You have to ask."

"I don't think I want to know the answer." Bren stated sadly.

A car horn screamed outside and Bren and Kimi headed out the door to go shopping with Howie and A.J.

Danielle Pages was smiling a crocodile smile. What a stir she had caused for Bren this morning.

"Chesire Cat, would you like to let me in on the joke?" asked Meg Knight, Danielle's best friend and conspirator for the last 7 years.

"Well, let's just say there is definitely trouble in paradise." Danielle flipped her blonde hair and winked at the guy sitting at the table next to them. He was the manager at the Pizzareia in the mall so that meant at least a couple of free pizzas for Danielle.

"Do you ever think about using your brain instead of looks to get a guy?" asked Meg.

Danielle was stunned. "Do you ever get tired of being stupid?..Apparently not because you keep doing it." Danielle got up and dumped her ice-cream in the trashcan. She had better things to do, better people to see, and a relationship to break up.

A small Nissan truck stopped in its tracks to avoid hitting the small rat-like creature in the road. Brian, his girlfriend Kaylan, and Kaylan's sister Kathy all ran into the road. Tyke stopped as if suddenly realizing all the hub-bub was about him and bounded back to Brian. Brian kissed the small dog but the driver of the truck was not joining in the celebration and angrily honked his horn and sped away.

"Don't you ever run away like that again." Brian stated sternly. Tyke although probably not understanding a word his master said looked ashamed of his actions and begin licking his Brian.

"What happened?" Kathy was out of breath and had caught onto the chase as she was jogging the path past Kaylan and Brian's picnic site.

"I have no clue, he was fine in my arms then he just shot off." Kaylan explained. She reached over to pet Tyke as the three headed back top the park. Tyke bit Kaylan.

"TYKE!"Brian yelled.

Kaylan was baffled and tears began to well as crimson rose quickly to the surface of her skin.
