Then and Now Chapter 28 AJ looked at Krys who was busy mumbling to herself as she pulled the contents out of her backpack and spread them out around her. “What are you doing?” AJ asked, breaking the nearly hour silence. “Trying to find a way to get us out of this mess.” she said calmly. “So now you’re a Macgiver type and going to build a cell phone out of...” he looked around at everything scattered around her. “a canteen, a couple bobby pins and an orange?” Krys pushed the hair out of her eyes. “No McLean, I was going to see if I had a compass and your map and then we could get back to the cabin before sunset.” “Actually thats a good idea.” He admitted and sat down next to her.Lis crawled inside the tent with her backpack to see Nick all ready unrolling his sleeping bag in the corner. “Heya!” he said, smiling at her. “Welcome to our place for the next three days.” Lis looked around. “Uhm yay?” she questioned. Nick stopped. “Now what is it you have against camping?” She set her bag down. “Well lets see, its outside, there's probably bears lurking around somewhere and its outside.” Nick laughed. “Your not an outdoorsy girl are you?” “Your finally catching on!” she teased, pulling her sleeping bag out and unrolling it. “And let me see, you are right?” Nick nodded. “The fresh air, the...” “Whoa ok I can see where your going with this.” she smiled at him. “So now we've unrolled the sleeping bags, what do we do now?” He looked around. “Lets see, tents up, Brian went to get firewood with Han, we're settled. I think we can just sit back and relax!” Brian and Han walked through the forest, looking for wood. “How much do we need?” Han asked, setting another branch in Bri's arms. “Probably more then these three twigs.” He said, looking at the small twigs in his arms. “It would be an awfully small fire.” Han smiled. “How bad is camping so far?” he asked, seeing Han head over to a group of broken branches. “Honestly, its okay. Thought it would be a lot worse. But we still have the rest of today and two more.” “I doubt anything will happen.” “Why don't I believe that. Oh wait, we're camping with nick and Lis.” Han laughed and put some more branches in his arms. Krys looked over the map. “Well, if we're here, we're near the lake but if we're here,” she pointed to another spot on the map, “We'll never be found.” AJ laughed. “Your joking right?” “Nope. Because if that’s where we are you led us so far off the trail no one will know where we went.” “Ok see if I can find water nearby, we're in a good spot.” AJ said, getting to his feet. “Hey, where do you think your gong?” Krys asked, stuffing the map back in her bag. “I'm going to walk a bit ahead, find a sturdy tree and climb up it.” “Goody! I'll be dragging you around after you break your neck.” she said sweetly. “Its called faith Krys, try it sometime.” he said, smiling at her. Krys sighed deeply. “Why did I go along wit this idea of yours? Man we shoulda just stayed at the cabin and hung out on the lake with Ang and Aims today.” AJ didn't hear her as he was all ready walking in the direction of a large, sturdy looking tree. Brian walked onto the campsite, arms full of wood. Han smiled as he sat next to her and tossed the wood on the ground. “We're set for the campfire.” Nick walked out of the now fully assembled tent and looked at Brian and Han. “So you two just going to sit around all day?” he asked, heading over to them. “Well, what would you have us do?” Han asked. Nick crouched down and looked around. “Last time we went camping, we needed a fire pit, so stones would be good.” Bri raised an eyebrow. “We collected the wood, you and Lis could do something.” Lis walked out of the tent. “We all ready did something.” Han laughed. “No need for details!” Nick smirked. “We put up our tent three times, we're done for the day.” “C'mon Han, we'll let these two lazy guys sit around here. Try not to burn the tents down.” Lis said, dragging her friend to her feet. “Aye aye captain.” Nick joked. Brian grinned. “I'll keep him away from an open flame.” “That would be a good idea.” Lis said, putting her sunglasses on. “Smart ass!” Nick replied, shaking his head. Krys stood next to the tree, watching AJ sit on a branch about twenty feet up. “Anything?” “Lotta trees.” He yelled down. “Whole lotta trees.” he muttered, looking around. He couldn't see the path or water anywhere. Krys sighed and sat down, “Well then get back down here. Maybe we should make a signal fire or something.” “What?” AJ hollered. “I said, maybe we should make a signal fire.” she yelled up at him. “Couldn't hurt! I'm coming down.” AJ made his way over to the trunk and started his way down, hearing an unfamiliar cracking sound. He looked over to see the branch he'd been sitting on sitting at a strange angle. “Krys move!” he yelled, just as the branch gave way. Next: Chapter 29 |
