When Roses Grow Black Chapter 22 My stomach hit the floor and I gulped. I stood frozen in my place, my feet cemented to the floor like a thousand year old sycamore tree's roots to the forest ground. My eyes stayed locked on the gun barrel still stuck in my face. His smile disappeared, but soon exploded out again as he let out an evil laugh. "Your parents?!?" he laughed incredulously in my face. "You're worried about your parents *now*?" He continued laughing for a few more moments before calming down. Slowly he began lowering the gun from my face, "I can't do this, yet. You don't even remember who you are. Never mind what you can give me." The gun was only down a moment when Nick came running from behind my enemy and tackled him to the ground. I could see that this was no easy task to Nick to do one-handed as he was panting by the time he had him on the ground covered with a blanket. So many emotions were buzzing around in my head and in my heart. I stood allowing the past few moments conversation to catch up with me. That's why there wasn't a search launched looking for me. My parents were dead. Murdered. I jumped about a mile when I felt two arms slip around me trying to give me comfort. I looked up in to AJ's kind brown eyes and gave him a weak smile. "It's okay, don't cry," he soothed as he rubbed my back while holding me close. "I'm not crying," my voice cracked pathetically and I felt him chuckle. "Then why are tears pouring out your eyes?" AJ responded and wiped my face of some tears. I hadn't realized what had been going on around me as I looked down the barrel of the gun. I hadn't noticed Kevin and Brian slip out the door in front of me to check out the situation and find help. I hadn't seen Nick sneak around my enemy in order to take him down. I hadn't even realized AJ was behind me the whole time, ready to push me out of the way of the bullet. "Hey Nick?" AJ began, "Why ain't that guy moving?" "I dunno," Nick replied as he got off the guy he had tackled and pulled the blanket off the unmoving body. "Aw, man!! Yo, dude, this is wack!," Nick exclaimed as the body revealed was not that of my enemy, but of a security guard with a bullet hole shot in his forehead. I was going in to shock. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. What was going on around me. My parents, dead which probably meant my brother, too. My home, gone. My life in danger. Yet I still found myself able to feel safe. I looked towards the door was and immediately felt sick. The walls out side in the hall were spattered with blood. In the door was layed a hand which blood was pooling around at this point. I covered my mouth and closed my eyes forcing myself to stay conscious. My mind kept telling me none of this was real, yet everything else was telling me it was.Next: Chapter 23 |
