About ten minutes later Mandy came back into her office, just as she did her boss called her into his office, so she went into his office and as she did her boss noticed she was still wearing only the one boot. Mandy looked around the office and said has Joe gone with a worried look on her face, yes her boss said and then added didn’t you see him he said he was going to return your boot to you. No said Mandy I was photocopying some papers in the end office. Her boss then said he must have left it in your office for you, I’ll have a look said Mandy as she headed for her office, after a few minutes she came back in and said it’s not in there with a troubled sound in her voice.
Her boss said with a reinsuring voice I’ll give Joe a ring on his mobile and ask him where he left it, but the call went straight to his voice mail so he left a message. So Mandy had to go back into her desk and get on with some work minus one boot. After a few hours and no Joe, not even a phone call from him Mandy was getting very worried. She sat there and looked down at her one shod state and thought to herself it would have to be my new boot, why couldn’t it have been my old ones or even my old black courts I wouldn’t have mined if I lost one of them. Just then the phone rang and it was Joe and he told her he had left her boot on her desk, it’s not here she said and Joe said he had left it by the phone on the end of the desk, then added it might have fallen on the floor so Mandy looked and saw the empty waste paper bin.
It was then she suddenly realized what might had happened as she saw the cleaner go past her door pushing a trolley. She jumped up and rushed after him, she stopped him and asked if he had seen her boot, he looked down at her feet, one bare nylon cover foot and one high-heeled ankle boot. No he said, Mandy then asked if he had emptied the bin in her office and he said yes, she looked in the bin on the trolley and it was empty. He then said I’ve emptied it all into the recycling bin in the back yard. Ok thanks Mandy says as she hurried down the corridor and then out of the rear fire door and out into the rear yard. Seeing the recycling bin she rushed across the yard and lifted the lid, but it was now empty she was too late her boot was now gone for good, Oh no she said muttered to herself.
Mandy sighed and then carefully limped back to the door but it was closed and can’t be opened from the outside, Oh No she said, then seeing the back gates open she would now have to walk around the block to get back to the front of the building to get back in. By the time she got back to her office most of the stuff had left including her boss. Since she lived only a few blocks away she walked to work and was now thinking maybe she should get a cab home. By now everyone else had gone home so she picked up her bag and keys and locked her office and walked to the main doors, stepping outside once again onto the cold pavement, which was now damp because it had started to rain.
Oh great no coat and only one boot and it’s raining she looked around for a taxi but not a single one in sight, so she started to walk home, by the time she got home the nylon on her bare foot was worn away and ripped, her foot was now sore and very cold. She open the door to her flat and flopped down on the settee, looking down at her one cold dirty bare foot and one new boot she thought to herself what a day I’m glad to be home.
