Tight security at gutted Maluku Governor's office
JAKARTA (JP): Tight security was imposed at the gutted Maluku Gubernatorial Office
compound on Jl. Pattimura in Ambon on Thursday following an arson attack by angry
residents shortly after a terrorist bomb exploded in which four innocent
Christiancivilians were killed and at least 50 others injured in the latest round of
violence in the restive province on Wednesday.
Dozens of troops were seen guarding the office compound and all access to the area
was blockaded by barbed wire, oil drums and wooden poles, while employees and
visitors also had their identity cards checked Antara reported.
Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina was busy helping with the evacuation of the
office, which had been almost completely destroyed in a fire on Wednesday. "The
material losses in the fire are estimated at about Rp 15 billion, excluding thepriceless
documents and files," he said.
The activities of the Maluku administration will be moved to Maluku's Provincial Public
Works office, pending repairs to the Governor's office.
"We have no choice but to soon coordinate the matter with the central government on
the renovation of the building," Latuconsina said, expressing deep concern over the
incidents.
Civil servants were busy collecting the remaining files and documents from their
offices and moving the furniture to a safer place.
Ambon saw a sense of normalcy on Thursday as businesses and schools resumed
