Chapter 1: The Orb of Light
"Yusuke! Hurry up! We're going to be late for school.... again!"
"Yeah, yeah, get off my back Keiko...." Urameshi Yusuke grumbled as he followed his best friend Yukimura Keiko to Sarasaki High. "I don't see why you keep dragging me to school."
"Because I don't want my best friend flipping burgers at the nearest McDonalds, now shut up and hurry up!"
Sighing, Yusuke followed Keiko as they continued on towards the high school. He knew Keiko was right, and as he thought about it, he really didn't want to turn out like his 'Kassan. He loved her, but there were days he just wanted to leave and not come back. He was so lost in thought, he bumped into Keiko, nearly making her fall over. "Why did we stop?" he asked sarcastically as caught her before she fell. "I thought we were in a hurry."
"There's a fight going on," Keiko said worriedly, pointing in front of her. Indeed, there was a fight going on about 200 feet in front of them, and in the center of it was a girl with waist length blue hair that was pulled into a ponytail.
"Come on sweet thing, give me a kiss," one of the guys taunted as he moved closer to the cornered girl. "I can show you a good time."
"Drop dead!" the girl snapped as she did a spin kick and kicked the guy in the head. The others backed off, surprised that the pretty girl could take care of herself. The girl flipped backwards into the air and landed on the top of a wall and got into a crouched position. "Anyone else want a...." she stopped in mid sentence. Her eyes narrowed before turning back to the group of guys who where now picking up their leader. "Get out of here before I decide to kick all your asses." The group didn't say anything as they ran off.
The girl flipped off the wall and was seeming to be looking for something when Yusuke and Keiko ran up to her. "Hey, that was amazing!" Yusuke exclaimed. "How did you learn to do that?"
The girl turned and looked at him and blinked. "You're.... you're a Spirit Detective, aren't you?" Her green eyes narrowed again, and before Yusuke could react, she slammed him up against the wall.
"HEY!" Yusuke growled at the girl. "Who the hell are you, and how do you know that I'm a Spirit Detective?"
"That's none of your concern! Now tell me, where is the Orb of Light?"
"What the hell are you talking about?!?"
"You know exactly....." Suddenly she froze. Her eyes widened. "It can't be...." She let go of Yusuke's shirt and growled. "We'll finish this later!" Using his shoulders for leverage, she jumped back on to the wall and disappeared over it.
"Yusuke, who was that?" Keiko asked, worried. "She looked really angry."
"I don't know," he replied, scratching the back of his head. "And what is this 'Orb of Light' she's so hell bent on getting?"
"Do you know of anyone that would know?"
"I bet Koenma know. He never tells me anything unless it suits him to do so." Yusuke rolled his eyes. "Come on, we better get to school before those idiots they call teachers have something else to give me detention with." He lets out a snort as they started walking again. "I could teach better than them with my eyes closed." Keiko started laughing as she and Yusuke continued on to school.
Unknown to them, the mystery girl watched them leave from a tree branch. Closing her eyes, a tear rolled down her cheek. "Kurama… Hiei… I thought you were dead…"
"Shuichi-kun! You forgot your lunch!"
Minamino Shuichi, aka Kurama, turned around and smiled when Minamino Shiori handed him his lunch. "Arigato Okassan."
"Is everything alright Shuichi-kun?" Shiroi asked worriedly. "You seem a little distant lately."
"Don't worry about me Okassan," Kurama said as he leaned over and kissed Shiroi on the cheek. "I'll be fine. I'll see you when I get home." He turned and started walking towards Meiou High. As he walked, a sudden breeze made his red hair move more than it should. "Ohayo Hiei."
"Did you feel that power earlier?" Hiei asked the youko, not saying hello back.
Kurama nodded. "Hai, I did. It's her, though it did seem fairly weak."
Hiei snorted lightly. "Raya, that stupid fox...."
"Hiei, don't...."
"Well, I just don't see what you still see in her," Hiei snapped back, crossing his arms in irritation as he glared at him. It was easier to look at Kurama without having to look up. From some miracle of Kami, he finally had a growth spurt and had grown from his original five feet to 5'6''. It was a nice change, not having to look up at everyone.
Kurama smiled slightly. "The only reason you don't like her is because she tried to get under your skin."
Hiei growled. "Shut up baka."
Kurama started to laugh. "Aibou, if I didn't know any better, I would think you were still in love with Raya."
Hiei let out a low growl and without another word, jumped into the air and disappeared.
Kurama let out another chuckle before continuing on to Meiou High. 'So I was right....'
"Koenma! Get your sorry baby ass out here!"
"Yusuke, don't speak to Koenma like that!"
Koenma, who was in his teenage form, calmly walked out of his office. "It's quite alright Botan, I know why he's here." He looked at Yusuke. "You want to know about the Orb of Light, correct?"
"Well, geez, with some girl ready to kill me for it, what was your first clue?" Yusuke snapped. "Start talking!"
Koenma sat down in front of his desk. "The Orb of Light is a magical ball that once belonged to a Fox Demon by the name of Raya. It is said that the orb holds the source of her power, since it was transferred to it."
"Why was it transferred?" Yusuke wanted to know.
"Raya was a very powerful, and very gentle Fox Demon, which was surprisingly uncommon. But one day, for reasons unknown, she became very angry and cold, and very cruel. She became so cruel, that my father took away her powers when she came into the Reikai and tried to wreck havoc. She disappeared shortly after, and no one has seen her since."
"Do you think Kurama might have known her?" Botan asked.
"I'm not too sure. You would have to ask him.
Botan blinked when Yusuke turned to leave. "Yusuke, where are you going?"
Yusuke looked at his guardian. "What does it look like? I'm going to talk to Kurama and find out if he knows this girl that's after my head." He turned and walked out of Koenma's office.
Botan looked worried. "Do you think Yusuke will stay out of trouble this time?"
Koenma rolled his eyes. "I doubt it. Yusuke's ALWAYS getting into trouble."
"See you tomorrow Minamino-san!"
Kurama bowed his head politely at the girl who spoke. "Ja na, Aina-san." The girl blushed and giggled before running off.
Kurama let out a soft groan as he left the school grounds. He hated it when the girls treated him like that. "Can't they find some other Ningen guys to drool over?" he muttered.
"They could, but you're pretty cute as a Ningen, so I can see why they drool over you."
Kurama turned around in surprise and found himself staring at a girl with blue hair and lavender eyes. She was wearing the uniform for Meiou High and her hair was pulled back into a ponytail. He blinked, sensing that her aura felt really familiar. "Do....do I know you?"
The girl laughed. "I do look a little different, don't I?" She put a hand to her hair and pulled out a white rose and tossed it to Kurama.
Kurama caught it and breathed in its scent. It was so unforgettable, he couldn't believe he didn't recognize her. "Raya?"
"Well, in my Ningen form I'm known as Kinomoto Aria, but I'm surprised you remembered me Kurama, or should I call you Minamino Shuichi?"
Kurama smiled slightly. "Kurama is fine." His smile soon faded as he walked towards her. "Now, tell me where you have been all these years."
"Well, after I left, I uh.... tried to take over the Reikai."
Kurama raised a eyebrow. "Are you kidding me?" He must have already been in his human form when this happened.
A tint of pink appeared on Aria's cheeks. "Yeah, well......I can't say it was one of my smartest moves, but I was upset at the time."
"Remind me never to tick you off then."
"Anyway," Aria said, ignoring Kurama's last remark, "that stupid King Enma took and locked up my powers, and without anything to defend myself with, I was easy to attack, so I turned myself into a spirit and placed myself into a body of a unborn baby."
"Like I did," Kurama said softly, stopping in front of Aria.
Aria sighed as some hair fell into her face. "Hai, now I have to get my powers back from that stupid jackass Enma." She blew the annoying piece of hair out of her face. "Why did he take my powers away?"
Kurama smiled and brushed Aria's hair out of her face, but letting his hand stop on her cheek. "Well, you DID try to take over Reikai. You were always such a troublemaker, my kawaii kitsune."
Aria blushed slightly as she let herself lean into Kurama's gentle touch. "Yeah, just like you were always a silly flirt," she teased as she looked up at him. She let her hand cover the one that was on her cheek and squeezed it softly. "I've missed you so much Kurama," she whispered.
"I've missed you too, Raya." He lowered his head towards hers and was about to kiss her when he felt a sudden breeze. He opened his eyes and looked behind him. "Hai?" Aria blinked, and looked where Kurama was.
Hiei, his arms crossed, looked pissed as he stared at his lover.. "Kurama, where have you been? I thought we were going to look for...." He stopped when he noticed at the girl Kurama was with. He growled, seeing how close they were. "Who's this?"
Aria's eyes widened slightly as she stared into his red eyes. 'It....it can't be....' She looked up at his hair, and gasped softly when she noticed the white in his spiked up black hair. "Hi... Hiei..." She tried to ignore the sudden flutter in her chest.
Hiei raised a eyebrow. "How do you know who I am?" he asked suspiciously.
Hurt filled Aria's eyes. "Baka fire demon!" she spat angrily, tears filling in her eyes. "I can't believe you don't remember me!"
Hiei eyes widened. Only one person called him that.... In a soft voice he said, "Raya."
Kurama looked at Aria and Hiei. 'This should be interesting....' he thought to himself, smiling slightly.
