New York detectives "Popeye" Doyle (Hackman) and Buddy Russo (Scheider) try to break a narcotics smuggling ring and uncover the french connection. One criminal involved in the smuggling tries to kill Doyle. This criminal takes Popeye out of the city limits, and one of the most famous car chase scenes takes place.

The movie does take a little while to get into the action, as throughout the movie, one cat and mouse game between the drug smugglers and two detectives takes place. The chase scene alone is enuogh reason to watch this five Academy Award Winner.
