The movie begins with army recruits straight out of high school who enlist into the army going through trecherous boot camp. The recruits are led through an eight week course lead by GNY SGT. Hartman (Ermey) who intimidates and re-names his "maggots".
The whole first half of the movie takes place at this boot camp. Hilarious dialogue, mostly from Hartman takes place. The comments are funny, but also very rude, and contain a lot of swearing (See rating content).
A recruit who is named Leonard Lawrence is renamed Gomer Pyles by Hartman. Private Pyles is overweight and not quick enough for many of Hartman's speed required obstacles. He is placed under the watchful eye of Private Joker (named by Hartman for his smart allic John Wayne remarks). Pyles still can't hack it, and is hated by all of the other recruits. He takes matters into his own hands. This decison he makes is the first climax of the movie (Scenes 14-15).
The second half of the movie takes place entirely in Vietnam. Private Joker and his companion Rafterman work for Stars and Stripes and go into the field to get combat photos. Their journies also involve them with direct combat where they will have to fire guns and make decisions to save each other's lives.
I do not want to spoil any part of this movie, as it is definetly worth watching. I rate the movie a 9.5, just shy of perfect. The movie is highly recommended. This movie along with Platton are the best movies ever made about the Vietnam War.
