I   Back  I

Teji Grover

From An Insecure Poet To An Unknown Reader

Is the sun
with me
at this moment and
the water and
the sound of a bud
soft as an infant's
sob ?

Does the earth
rise under my feet
at this moment
and the wind imagine
I'm a bough
as it moves above my
head ?

Do you hear. . . ?

No, look, you need not
listen to me and
turn your head
this way; no, all you need
to do, wherever you are,
is to open your eyes
wide enough for a
tear or light and
see and feel and tell
me whether the sun
and all that
are with me
at this moment.

It is this sometime
doubt that causes my
long
silences.
