A fun project for students is to make SUGAR SKULLS. Here is an easy recipe:

1/3 cup light corn syrup

1/8 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

6 cups powdered sugar

2 packages (7 oz) almond paste

vegetable food dyes

Combine first 4 ingredients in 3 quart pan Add 2 cups sugar and slowly heat mixture to about 110ºF. Add almond past to mixture Turn off hear and stir mixture until well blended. Remove from heat. Turn mixture onto a board covered with remaining 4 cups of sugar. Knead sugar until dough is formed. Store dough in tightly sealed container in refrigerator over night. Sculpture dough into skull shapes. Detail figues with vegetable food dyes and toothpicks or icing. Recipe makes about 8 skulls the size of a golf ball.

Here is another recipe to make "kitchen clay" skulls.

Mix:

1 cup of cornstarch

2 cups baking soda

1 1/4 cups of cold water

Stir all ingredients in saucepan over medium heat for about 4 minutes until the mixture thickens to moist mashed potato consistency. Remove from heat, turn onto a plate and cover with a damp cloth until cool. Knead as you would dough. Shape into skulls. Allow to dry.

For color, add a few drops of food coloring to the water before it is mixed with starch and soda.

Skulls may be painted with water or acrylic color. To seal, dip in shellac or brush with clear fingernail polish.
