With the advent of Christ, alternative religion has had stigma attached to it. It had been viewed by the Western world as evil. And when the Burning Times arrived, pagans and witches (as well as believers of other relgions) were persecuted. Thus causing the majority of pagans and witches to go 'underground' until the enviroment in which they live became safe for the Old Ways to emerge.
