The Great Jellymeat 'Mishap',
Kaimanawa Street - c1991-3
The 'truck spill' pictured below happened at the bend in Kaimanawa Street just north of Rhodes Drive, at some time between 1991 and 1993. A pallet of Jellymeat fell from the truck as it passed around the bend. The householder who supplied these three photos of the mess, has also outlined a number of other 'lost control' accidents that have occurred at this bend. These are:
Around 1991-3 - A motorbike hit the curb, missed the tree and lamp post pictured below, but hit the concrete wall behind them.
Mid-1990s - A Mini speeding around the Rhodes Drive-Kaimanawa Street intersection lost control and crashed into the retaining wall of the corner house where it fronts Kaimanawa Street. The occupant/s fled.
1998-9 - Cortina mounted the curb, passed through the narrow gap between brick wall and the lamp post pictured below, damaging both, but did not wait around for the Police to arrive.
During this period, another two accidents have also occurred on the other side of the street in apparent association with these two bends. In both cases the vehicles smashed into the corners of properties damaging the fences.
The offending vehicle is shown above on the left. The remaining cartons on the pallet had fallen on the road after it was stationary.
