Five Easy Pieces

At first glance, "Five Easy Pieces" appears to be a movie about nothing. In actuality, it's a movie about somebody, about the day-to-day struggles of a man named Robert Dupea. Robert, or "Bobby" as his eternally loyal girlfriend Rayette Dipesto is fond of calling him, is a drifter at heart, who can never get comfortable in one place for too long. He works in an oil field, though his background is in classical music. Though he's a skilled pianist, he has no feeling for the music - or for much of anything else. When he learns his father has had two strokes and is slowly dying, Robert drives to his family estate for a visit, if just for the sake of having something to do and a means of keeping his girlfriend out of his hair. Along the way, he picks up a pair of hitchhikers who are on their way to a cleaner living environment in Alaska, and who aren't shy about expressing their anti-establishment views on the American way of life. When he arrives at his family's estate, the audience gets to meet the rest of Robert's musically-gifted family - His main interest revolves around his brother's classy fiancee, whom he's determined to have for himself.
