NS Train wheels down Duncan Hill in southern Indiana, across the river from Louisville. February 1999. | ||||||||
ACROSS THE MIGHTY OHIO RIVER JEFFERSONVILLE AMTRAK & L&I FREQS 161.025 , 160.725 The L&I yard can be easily reached just off of I-65 north. Take Eastern Blvd., and follw the signs to teh Amtrak station. The Kentucky Cardinal usually arrives from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM. It leaves at 10:30 P.M to head north. From the station you can see the yard well. If you get off at the next exit, you will find an old tower that guards the former B&O (CSX) line where it crosses the Louisville and Indiana line, former PRR. NEW ALBANY CSX, NS, & SOO. FREQS 160.230 (CSX & SOO), 160.950 (NS), Take I-64 across the Ohio, jump off at first exit. Find you way to Main Street. The NS line runs along the Ohio Flood Wall. If you head east, take a right at either Pearl Street, or Bank Street. These will lead you to the Jaycees Riverfront Park. Here you have a nice view of NS, and an observation platform to look out over the river, with the Louisville Skyline and the K&I bridge in the distance. Head further east along Main Street, and you will come to a grade crossing with two tracks. Go right here and you will go towards the Indiana end of the K&I Bridge. A nice shot can be had of trains comming off the bridge. Recently NS has put up no tresspassing signs, at the approach, and it is recomended that you do not hang out near the bridge for any length of time. From the bridge, the NS main curves west, and the former B&O and Monon, now CSX head northward. Where the CSX route crosses Main Street, one route deverges northwest, the other east. The former B&O route cuts east on a sharp curve, across from the Marathon convience store on the corner. The former Monon rote squeezes between two buildings, heading northward. If you follow Route 111, go to Spring Street, and turn left. This will take you to East 15th street, where about 10 blocks of street running can be seen. NS is the busiest and you usually do not have to wait long for a train. CSX runns it's trains in fleets. You won't see a train for hours, than you will see three in 30 minutes. Union Pacific power can be frequently seen. The Soo Line trains runs through on the Monon route, usually in the AM or early PM. Soo Line power also can consist of CP Rail, as well as Soo Line units. DUNCAN HILL NS FREQ 160.950 If you follow Main Street west from I-64 it becomes the Corydon Pike. It closely follows the NS as it begins the climb in the Floyd Knobs, a.k.a. to NS as Duncan Hill. There are many photo oppurtunities along the road as it climbs into the Knobs. NS dissapears into Duncan Tunnel out of view in the Knobs. This is pusher country, and you will see many of them. Occasionally you may even catch a double up the hill. DUNCAN TUNNEL AND BEYOND NS FREQ 160.950 If you follow the Corydon Pike to the top of the hill, take a right at the intersection where the road ends. Follow this past I-64 as it turns into Route 64 and watch on your left. About a mile you will find the west portal of Duncan Tunnel. Here is the top of the grade, the second steepest mainline grade in the U.S. Pushers usually cut off just beyond here. BEYOND If you follow Route 64 further west, to Georgetown and beyond, other photo locations will be found. RETURN TO HOME PAGE |
