Fisherman sentenced to three years for church bombing in
Lampung
JAKARTA (JP): The Tanjungkarang District Court sentenced a fisherman to three
years' imprisonment Tuesday for his involvement in the bombing of a church in
Tanjungkarang, Lampung, in June last year, Antara reported.
Presiding Judge S. Gani Parlaungan declared that defendant Timor Deli was guilty for
assisting in the bombing of Bethany Church by providing chemical materials for the
makeshift bombs.
The defendant said he would appeal the verdict as he claimed he had no idea that the
chemical would be used for the bomb.
Prosecutor Syafrudin Syams, who earlier sought 15 years imprisonment for the
defendant, had not yet decided whether to appeal the verdict or not. The offense
carries a maximum penalty of death.
According to the verdict, Timor bought the chemical for another defendant, Ramon
Niode, who is being tried separately. Ramon was asked by a leader of a local Islamic
organization to bomb the church. The leader, identified as Habib H.S., is also being
tried in the same case.
