Canadian embassy warns of terrorist threat in Indonesian cities
JAKARTA (JP): Terrorists are planning imminent attacks on a range of targets,
including churches and hotels, in four cities in the country, AFP reported.
"The embassy has received credible information that terrorists may be planning
attacks in Jakarta, Manado, Balikpapan, and Batam in the near future,"said the
Canadian embassy circular to its citizens, dated Friday.
The embassy warning said that the possible targets of the attacks included luxury
hotels and churches, as well as bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues catering
to expatriates.
The latest warnings come amid continuing security fears in the wake of the October
12 bombings in Bali which killed at least 190 people. The police have arrested the
perpetrators, who will be tried in February.
Manado, at the northernmost tip of Sulawesi island borders the southern Philippines.
A bomb exploded in front of the Philippine consulate there in October butcaused no
victims.
Balikpapan is a major oil town in East Kalimantan while Batam is an industrial island
just south of Singapore.
Several countries, including U.S, Britain and Australia, have warned possible terror
attack on the Christmas Eve. But there was no incident reported during the
celebrations around the country.
