JRS MOLUCCAS
Time bomb
Pos Kupang also reported that Battalion 741 on Saturday, 14 December 2002,
successfully evacuated a bomb planted in an elementary school building in Batu
Gantung, Nusaniwe, Ambon. The time bomb was found by some local people living
near the school.
Conflict between two Moslems areas (report by Silvia Dian Anggoro)
On 9 December 2002, there was a clash between Ureng and Asilulu, two Moslems
villages in Ambon.
3 people dead and 24 people got wounded in the incident. The conflict started on the
inciden! t a day before, when a speedboat from Ureng came too close to Asilulu
sampan, which causing one of sampan's crew falling into water. in the following
morning, the Ureng villagers attacked on Asilulu village, causing 30 houses was being
burnt
Go and See Visit to North Moluccas
After obtained an official letter from Moluccas province signed by the governor of
Moluccas, JRS Moluccas team (2 staff), together with 5 delegations of IDPs from
North Moluccas left Ambon on Lambelu ship. They departed on Sunday, 17 November
2002 to go to North Mollucas province for a Go and See Visit Program.
This team visited some subdistricts in North Moluccas such as Oba, Weda, Gane
Timur (East Gane) and Bacan. The visit was aimed to monitor the recent situation of
the target areas, especially the security clearance before IDPs from North Moluccas
who still residing in Moluccas province return to their place of origin.
Conducive situation, welcoming host communities an! d reassurance from the
government, the military and the people around will all support the desire of the IDPs
to return back to their original place, with an exception of one village, Sesowomo
which still bears a conflict potent with neighbourhood villages. JRS recorded all the
situation and condition in the target areas on video, and also recorded some video
messages from the host receiving communities for IDPs in Moluccas province.
This Go and See Visit program was of course involving IDPs as the ones who will
return for good to their place of origin. By doing so, it is hoped that they will really give
clear picture over the situation in the receiving communities, strengthen by those
recorded material on video.
From this visits, JRS Moluccas recommended the government to immediately take
serious step to take back the IDPs to their original place by first having
pre-coordination with the local government, where the IDPs came from. Besides
clearance distributio! n over some assistance, termination fund, transportation toll
from IDPs camp, livelihood packages, and some materials to build houses. JRS will
surely ready to assist the coordination to obtain durable solution for IDPs.
