History

Kijik Canoe was formed in 1986 by Mike Dearborn and Jim Chatsick.  Initially building traditional Cedar Canvas canoes, Kijik Canoe has moved on to producing excellent quality Kevlar and Fiberglass canoes, as well as providing many related accessories and services that help to make your canoeing experience one that is enjoyable and functional.

Kijik (pronounced 'kee-jik') is the Algonquin Indian word for 'cedar'.  Indians regarded cedar as the tree of life (Arbor Vitae).  All Kijik Cedar Canvas canoes are deep, stable craft and are exceptionally good for tandem tripping.  A traditional canoe that allows you to peacefully enjoy nature, they perform like a leaf on the water.  With rough lakes, quiet streams, or moving water, Kijik canoes are at home.

Built with pride, your Kijik canoe will give you a lifetime of dependable canoeing that our company stands behind.  We designed our canoes with the help and guidance of Omer Stringer, our friend and a master canoeist.  Every time a Kijik canoe glides down a wilderness stream, a part of Omer will be with it.

The canoe has been the ideal mode of travel in Canada for centuries.  It is an invaluable tool for hunting, fishing, exploring, and prospecting.  In modern times, recreation has become the primary function of this amazing craft.  Kijik canoes will take you to all the places that you've imagined or heard of and have not been able to access.  You can camp, fish, and explore or just slip out for a quiet, relaxing paddle.  Your senses will be more aware in a Kijik canoe than in any other type of craft.

To complete the canoe package, we have teamed up with two other quality suppliers.  Wolverine Paddle of Port Hope, Ontario is a company that produces excellent one piece black cherry or maple paddles in the otter tail style.  The second company is Canoe Accessories at Mazinaw Lake near Cloyne, Ontario.  This innovative company produces a variety of canoeing and kayaking accessories that will make your experience more enjoyable.  Products such as seat cushions, motor mounts and sail kits are of the highest quality and are very affordable.

If a Kijik canoe can make your precious free time more enjoyable, then we are happy to have been of service.
