Levon Lundy usually loved returning to his hometown of Lomard, Texas.

    Usually.

This trip, the 6'6, blond wavy haired Houston police sergeant was unnaturally withdrawn, edgy and downright moody.  Maybe it was because on this trip, it was to settle his late, beloved grandmother's affairs.

Minnie Elizabeth Lundy, called Mother Minnie, had been buried over two weeks earlier and now it was time to close up her house, the house he'd been raised in until he was 16.
"Lundy I know this is a hard time for you but if you don't stop acting like a major jackass soon I'm gonna kill you for sure." Joseph LaFiamma had warned him that morning before he left for the lawyer's office.
The dark haired Italian cop, Lundy's partner for well over three years, and Levon's 25 year old cousin, Morgan Harrison, had accompanied him to Lomard and were going to finish packing stuff up at the house while he dealt with Minnie's last will & testament.

Lundy had been snapping at anything for days and so far the Chicago native had taken it much longer than normal since the two partners were constantly arguing but when Lundy had yelled a little too loudly and too long at his cousin then Joe had stepped in.

"The kid and I cared for Minnie too and we know you're hurting but if you ever raise your voice at her like that again, those mercs of hers won't be able to break your legs, got it?"

LaFiamma's last threat went unanswered for Levon left for his meeting with the lawyer. It was true that while Morgan had know Mother Minnie far longer and the matriarch of the Lundy family certainly treated the girl like her own, she also took quite the liking to her only grandson's pigheaded Italian friend and Lundy knew that Minnie's death had also been a blow to them.

"Though it shouldn't have been." He muttered, realizing that all of them had known that his grandmother had been dying of cancer for well over a year and that it was a blessing that her suffering was finally over but it still hurt like hell for him to have to decide what to do with the house and her stuff.

"Actually Levon, Minnie took care of most of the final arrangements shortly before she went to the hospital the last time."  Old Ed Hiller had been Levon's grandparents attorney since he could remember.

The lawyer sat down behind a cluttered desk, motioning the younger man to sit across from him.  "Your grandmother's will is pretty straightforward except for one thing."

"One thing?" Levon sudden;t had the thought that he should have brought Morgan's own lawyer with him to translate things.  "Like what?  All she had was the house and whatever my grandfather left her."

Hiller studied the papers in his hand a second before raising bushy eyebrows.  "Minnie had a little more than that, son.  Your grandmother was a very shrewd woman and realized the costs of things today.  She wanted to make sure you and your family were taken care of."

Levon frowned.  "Mr. Hiller, Mother Minnie was all the family I had left except for my cousin.  Wherever my father is, he can stay gone."

"Yes, well.  Minnie had some stocks and certificates worth several hundred thousand, as well as the insurance policies for both her and your grandfather.  There are a few other things but I can send them to an attorney in Houston if you'd like, but they only thing she stressed I should explain is what she wanted specifically for you and of you.

Minnie understood how you would probably handle her death and left you this letter which you can read later.  She, of course, has left a small provision for your father should we ever locate him but everything else, the house, stocks, money and etc are to be split between you and your cousin with this letter here going to a 'Joseph LaFiamma'.  Your partner?"

Lundy was confused by this point.  Why would his grandmother give Joe a letter and why had she scrimped and saved if she had enough money to live comfortably.

"Minnie said that she wanted all that for you.  She said that she wanted to give you something that your father had never bothered to." Hiller explained.

"Why, Mother Minnie?" he asked again after leaving the lawyer's office, pulling off the road in order to read the letter his grandmother had addressed to him.  In the plain white envelope was a letter handwritten by Mother Minnie to him:

"'Little Levon,  I gave to Ed to give to you, so if you're reading this
then I'm gone and you're probably giving Joseph fits.  I know your moods but
I also know you're do what I want you to so listen to your Mother Minnie now.

"Levon, when your Daddy started going off for weeks or months at a time,
your grandfather & I never doubted that the time would come when you'd
leave.  I tried to teach you the tings you'd need to know: pride and self
respect.  Things Big Levon never really understood.   When you chose to
follow in your granddad's footsteps and become a police officer I knew I'd
worry but knew you'd make us proud and you have.  You've had your share of
trials, Caroline's death the worst but you overcame them to be stronger.
Now you have to overcome this.

"I love you but, boy, you are stubborn.  When Caroline died you pushed
everyone away.  You aren't alone this time.  You have a little cousin who
adores you and a partner who cares too.  Joseph and Morgan are your family
too. Don't push them away.  Let them in because you'll never be alone unless
    you do."

Lundy finished the letter slowly before refolding it and putting it away inside his jacket, swallowing a few times before he could see right again.

His grandmother's final words had been the right ones to hit home.

"'I will always be with you, Little Levon.  In your heart.  Take care of yourself and don't pick on Joe.  Love always, Mother Minnie.'"

"I love you too, Mother Minnie." He whispered before putting the truck in gear and heading for his grandmother's house which was now surrounded by motocycles and 2 small moving vans.

The Queens Court Raiders worked for Morgan and had been scarce the last few days and the blond Texas native knew why.  They weren't allowed to kill or maim him.

"Where's Morgan and LaFiamma?" he asked the first head brave enough to peek out.
Kelly Robinson, their leader, pointed as he shoved a box into the truck. "House." He clipped it off which meant he'd been fighting with Levon's partner again.

"Alright, according to the clipboard, the goodwill gets the clothes and all the foodstuff.  We wait for hothead to get back so I know for sure what he's hauling back to Houston and what not." LaFiamma was sitting on the bottom step calling orders out to muttering mercenaries and didn't notice his
partner right away until a letter hit his face. "What?"

"Mother Minnie left this for you." Levon explained, looking around.

    "Morgan upstairs?"

LaFiamma frowned at the envelope before nodding.  "Yeah, she packing up Minnie's jewelry and small stuff.  What's in this?"

"Don't know.  Read it." Lundy returned, going upstairs to find his cousin. At 25, Morgan was one of the top international agents but still reminded Levon of the child she had been once before things had went bad between them.  It had only been recently that they reconciled, now though he sensed
    her wariness of him again.

"I put all of Grammy's jewelry in those small suitcases cause they're padded and I'm almost done wrapping the knick-knacks." She replied upon sensing his presence.  "I'm not sure what you want to do with them so I told Kelly to put them in the trucks cause they can be easily stored someplace."

Lundy sat down on the bed behind where she was sitting carefully wrapping glass figurines in paper.  "Have I been that bad lately, sugar?" he asked softly upon seeing her tense when he brushed her auburn hair.

"I.know you're upset Levon." She sighed, obviously hesitant about answering the question.  "You miss Grammy.  I.do too."

"I know you do sugar.  Have Kelly packed all this stuff in my truck." He declared, seeing her frown as she turned to look at him.  "She'd want you to have it."

Morgan started to argue when he lightly put a finger on her lips.  "Mother Minnie was right.  You are the only family I have.  You and..Joe and he was right this morning. I have been a major jackass and I'm sorry."

"You agreed with Joe." She grinned even as he was rolling his eyes just as the mentioned Italian came in still holding the letter Minnie had wrote him.

"She made me your guardian Lundy." He marveled, then laughed. "Minnie said I'm the only one with enough common sense to watch out for you and the kid."

Lundy made a grab for the paper but LaFiamma stuck it in his pocket with a smug look.  "Looks like you're stuck with me partner."

"Maybe it's the other way around LaFiamma." Levon countered dryly, figuring that would drive his friend crazy the trip back to Houston. The Italian cop frowned but waved it away.  "Kelly said he and the boys would finish packing up if you're ready to hit the road back to civilization."

Lundy looked around his grandmother's room and could hear her words even as he remembered reading them.  "'Don't hang onto the past, Little Levon.  Go home and face the future.'"

"Yeah.  Yeah, partner.  I'm ready." Lundy nodded, reaching for Morgan's hand as he tossed Joe a suitcase.  "This  'guardianship' my grandmother gave you does not include dating my cousin, LaFiamma."

"I was given the duty to watch out for Morgan as well and can you think of anyone better than yours truly for her to date?" Joe asked as went out the front door and headed by the red Chevy truck his partner drove.

"Sure can.  Half the axe murders in Houston." Lundy returned with a grin, hearing Morgan try to cut the fight off before it started good and he looked back at the house of his childhood.  "Goodbye, Mother Minnie." He whispered.

         THE END

This story isn't rated fore it only has a few bad words and is mainly about the human emotions we seem to forget about.
The Characters except for Morgan and the Queens Court Raiders belong to the writers and creators of Houston Knights.  The others are mine and are not to be used anywhere else.
Feedback is appreciated as the writer is very wary about this story. It's the shortest one I ever did.  Thanks.
