About the Artist: Helen Krummenacker
A California native and a resident of Sacramento County for the last 14 years, Helen Krummenacker always enjoyed sketching for her own amusement, but only began taking her art seriously around 1998. Her husband had had a dream of being an artist, and she had been not only encouraging him, but suggesting subjects, poses, advising him as to color choices, and generally getting deeply involved in the creative process. At last she decided to try making some pices that would be completely hers. Starting with mixed media, where she could focus freely on elements of composition, she quickly found confidence to explore different formats. She has been and is still experimenting with numerous forms of mediums (acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, collage, photography...), and has won awards in cometitions in every medium she has tried.
For this show, Helen has chosen to display works inspired by nature. She works from a mixture of direct observation, memory, photographs, and her imagination.
Stylistically, she feels her primary influence is Van Gogh. The world is full of motion-- changes in temperature, deflections of light, currents in the air. His art work suggests that motion, and Helen often tries to capture a similiar sense of hidden motion, although other works are more about a single moment of serenity. She is also influenced by the linear movements of Chinese ink painting, and her inclinations toward illustration-- Helen was a writer before she began painting and continues to work on poems and stories.
