He was the son of Johann Conrad KILTS and Susanna Margaretha MOOR. Johann died 1784/1786 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, and was buried 1784/1786 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY.

WILL: The will of Peter Kultz of Palatine District in Montgomery Co. was dated 25 Jul 1784 and never recorded (Montgomery Co. Dept. of History and Archives). The w/o Johann Peter Kultz was Anna Maria Bellinger (HJ).

NOTE: The Peter Kilts farm located on Kilts Road, Stone Arabia, Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY USA, is being restored by Willis Barscheid. The old "Dutch" barn has been restored to its original Kilts use and the house is being worked on. There are also other buildings on the property that are being restored. (1999)

DEATH: He was living 4 December 1784 when his mother-in-law made her will, but had died by 27 August 1786 when his son, Conrad was called heir at law in connection with Peter's back pay as a Revolutionary soldier. He died at Stone Arabia (David Kendall Martin).

BURIAL: In the cemetery located behind the house on the Peter Kilts property, Kilts Road, Stone Arabia, Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY USA.

He married Anna Maria BELLINGER 1748/1749 in NY, USA. She was born about 1730 in Minden, Montgomery Co., NY. She was the daughter of Adam BELLINGER, I and Anna Appolonia [------?------] . Anna died 1770 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, and was buried 1770 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY.

MARRIAGE: (HJ) He married (1st) Catharina, and then md. (2nd) Margaretha.

CHURCH: (DKM) The records of the Stone Arabia Reformed Church begin listing new members in 1739. A Protocol von den Glidmasen (Register of Members) shows that hannes Kels was received Juny 16, 1745.

NATURALIZATION: 20 March 1762, together with Peter, Adam, and Nicholas, Johannes Kilts were naturalized (COLONIAL LAWS OF NEW YORK, vol. 4, BON).

MILITARY: Elaine Liepshutz has the notation, "Revolutionary War Veteran". He married (1) Catharina Margaretha STUTZ about 1750. She was born about 1726.

17. Johann Adam⁴ KILTS <See pg. 5> (Johann³, Johann², Hanss¹) was born 27 Aug 1730 in Henau, Hunsruck, Germany, and was christened 24 Oct 1731 in Henau, Hunsruck, Germany. He was the son of Johann Conrad KILTS and Susanna Margaretha MOOR. Johann died after 1810 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried after 1810 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.

CHURCH: (DKM) In 1788 Adam Kels was a Deacon in the Stone Arabia Reformed Church, and a 1790 list of seat owners for that church includes Adam Kilts with seat #45 of the Men's Seats, seat #33 on the West side of the Women's Seats, and seats #171-2 in the gallery.

NATURALIZATION: Adam Kiltz was naturalized 20 March 1762 (Scott & Stryker-Rodda, p. 39).

NOTE: (DKM) In the Kilts Family Association Archives is a photostat of an original deed dated 24 February 1798 whereby Adam Kilts his X mark and his wife Cathrena her X mark of Palatine for $25 sold to George Stamm, Jr. of the same place one acre in the southeast corner of the westernmost half of lot 16 of the second division of the Stone Arabia Patent. The deed was witnessed by Christoph Hein, John Aumoiky, and John Coppernoll.

MILITARY: (HJ) Adam Kills was in the Company of Soffrines Deychert 20 March 1757, and Adam Kilts was in Soverinus Deyger's Co., 24 July 1763 (REPORT OF STATE HISTORIAN, Vol. II, p. 783 & 789. (DKM) During the Revolution, Adam Kilts served as an enlisted man in the 2nd Regiment of Tryon County Militia under Col. Jacob Klock (Roberts). Adam Kilts served as a private in the companies of Capt. Klock and Capt. Suts (Fernow). He also served under Capt. Rudolph Kock. He is listed as a Revolutionary ancestor in the DAR PATRIOT INDEX.

(DKM) French and Indian War: Adam served in the militia during the French and Indian War. A list headed: Company of Soffrines Deychert 1757 March 20th By an order of Sir William Johnson To march with my Company to Fort William Henery as Follweth Returned home ye 29 Instant, include among the privates, Adam Kills with Phillip and Peter Kills (TARSH II:783). And Adam Kils, with Philip Kils, is listed as a private on a list headed: Soverinus

Deyger's Company. A True List of ye state of my company of Militia who has been on command at ye German Flatts, By Order of Sir William Johnson ye 24th Day of July 1763, as Followeth. Vizt: ...(TARSH II:793).

BURIAL: (DKM) Adam and his wife were buried on their Schoharie County farm. Between 1895 and 1900 they and Maria Ball were disinterred; all three bodies were placed in one coffin and stored overnight in a barn, then reinterred in Sharon's Slate Hill Cemetery. One stone was set up which had only Maria Ball's name on it. Adam and Catherine's stones have disappeared.

NOTE: There has been much speculation in the family of Florence Zula (Shafer) Witthoft and her nephew, Henry Arba Lyker, as to the location of the farm on which Adam Kilts settled when he came from Stone Arabia to Sharon. Florence and Henry erected a New York State Historical Monument along the Sharon-Argusville Road, but said that that wasn't the location of the farm along the road, but it "was back over in there", and today there is no road "back over in there". I don't know the author of the following, but it was in some material given to me by Ted Hoyt: They (Daniel and Nancy - second wife) lived on the farm in Sharon - the one which Adam Kilts took when he left Stone Arabia in 1730. Daniel and George both lived on it. The house and barn with the exception of a concrete silo burned to the ground in 1940. The livestock were overcome with smoke and burned to death.

THE COBLESKILL TIMES, Thursday, March 7, 1940, headline reads: $30,000 Fire Loss As Barn, House Go Near Argusville; Cattle, Horses, Farm House and Barns Destroyed On Kilts Place; Water Lack Handicap.

(HWW) We know the location of this property; first buildings on the left on a knoll and a log house has been constructed there. With this information, it seems that Florence Zula (Shafer) Witthoft and Henry Arba Lyker were incorrect with the location of Adam's original farm, i.e., "back over in there". Florence is my mother and I find it hard to believe that she is incorrect as to the location of the Adam farm. She was born in 1890, always interested in family, and knew a lot about the Kilts family who were born in the early 1800's. If she wasn't certain about something, she was quick to say so and qualify her statements, but in this case, as to the location of the original Adam farm, it was "back over in there".

ADDITIONAL NOTE: (DKM) No record has been found for Adam Kilts in the 1800 census which is imperfect for the Palatine area. Despite the mention in Roscoe's HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY that John Adam Kiltz moved from Stone Arabia in 1790 and purchased the farm upon which Daniel and George Kilts, his grandsons, then resided, Adam did not likely move there until 1800 or after; the deed (sale of one acre to George Stamm, Jr.) shows he was certainly in Palatine which included Stone Arabia in 1798. Roscoe continues that the old gentleman brought the boards with him from Stone Arabia to build a house. He reared four sons, namely Conrad, John, Adam and Peter, who were the fathers of the present heads of the Kilts family. The farm is located less than a mile north of Sharon Hill on the road to Argusville...The first, a board house, was built beside the willow trees in the valley and later moved to the top of the hill where today you can see only the burned remains of the farm buildings. (Today, 1999, the burned house and farm buildings are demolished except the concrete silo and later a log house was constructed there.)

Two or three Frank families appear to have settled at German Flatts before the time of the French & Indian devastation in 1757.....(and then he

lists "probable lines" of Conrad <C>, Henry <H>, and Stephen <S>)..."

Another Frank family, headed by ANDRIES Frank, was living at Canajoharie, NY, by about 1742 (BOOK OF NAMES, page 60) and had children born between 1735 and 1760 with names Eva, Catherine, Christofel, Adam, John, Henry, Jacob, and possibly Elisabeth (who married by 1776 Frederick Staring).

During the Revolution we see probable descendents of Andries in Col. Fisher's Regiment from the Fonda, NY, area which lists Henry, Adam (at Oriskany), Albert, Andrew (wounded), John (killed at Oriskany) and Jacob (killed). Florence Hulsizer says: Herman, page 92 - Frank, 2nd paragraph; Andries Frank: lists his children. One of these was Catherine Frank who we know was the wife of our Adam Kilts of our Conrad, Adam, John Kilts descendancy.

Tochter von (lawful daughter of) Adam Kills listed the Protocol van den Glidmasen (Register of Members) of the Stone Arabia Reformed Church for August 1788, (probably confirmation date, age 14 - HWW), as there is no Sara on Adam's family record. She is probably, because of the location, the Susan Kilts who married David Shaver 21 April 1804 (German Reformed Church of New Rhinebeck (Sharon)).

NOTE: On 14 February 1764, Nicholas Kells of Stone Arabia bought lot 15 of the Stone Arabia Patent. This farm, located on "Kilts Hill", is now owned and occupied by Kilts descendants, Henry and Deanne Crofoot. (1999) They do not operate it as a farm, but live in the house and rent out the land to neighboring farmers, keeping the land in production and in a good state of cultivation.

(DKM) In 1773 Nicholas Kilts sold 25 acres of lot 15 to George Coppernoll.

(DKM) On the property a well, sacred to the Indians, who had previously lived in the area. Until the late 1800's, the Indians came regularly at a fixed time bringing pebbles which they would dip in the water and hold to their eyes as a cure for sore eyes. Clarence Crofoot recalls a time as a child when a group of Indians came all the way from Canada to perform a ceremony at the well; he was told by his grandmother Kilts about their regular visits.

CHURCH AFFILIATION: (DKM) 8 June 1772 Nicholas his K mark Kills signed, with

many other members of the Stone Arabia Reformed congregation, a call for a minister and subscribed 12 shillings (Vosburgh's transcription of the Reformed Church records, Stone Arabia, T-Palatine, NY, New York State Library, pp. 99-101).

MILITARY: REPORT OF THE STATE HISTORIAN, Vol. II, p. 799 details his French & Indian War service in 1763.

(DKM) Nicholas Kilts saw militia service during the French and Indian War; a 1763 list of Captain Deyger's Delinquents: Officers and Persons Names, not appeared at the German Flatts when was ordered by me, Soverinus Deyger, Capt. of a Company of Militia at Stonraby, includes Nicklass Kills (TARSH II:799); the company had been ordered to German Flats by Sir William Johnson 24 July 1763.

The Revolutionary War seriously disrupted the Nicholas Kilts household. In his Revolutionary pension application (S13629), Nicholas's son, Peter N. Kilts, deposed that his father (Nicholas) and family were constrained to move into Fort Paris in the year 1778 before Peter had arrived to the age of 16.

During the Revolution Nicholas Kilts served as an enlisted man under Col. Jacob Klock in the Second Regiment of Tryon County Militia and Nicholas Kell (Kills) was listed as an enlisted man in Col. Frederick Fisher's Third Regiment of Tryon County Militia (Roberts). Fernow shows Nich's Kilts was a private in the company of Capt. Suts under Col. Klock and Nicholas Kiltz was a private under Capt. Miller, also under Col. Klock.

Among the receipts collected by Col. Klock from his men for service during the Revolution is #19022 24 June 1786 due Nick's Kills pvt. under Capt. Peter Suts, received by Nick's Kilts his mark K, witnessed by Cornelius C. Beekman, for 2.13.4 (pounds-money) (New York State Archives).

DEATH: Clair Kilts says died at "Reimensnyders Bush, NY", so I'm assuming he means in the Town of Manheim, Herkimer Co., NY (HWW).

He married (1) Maria Catharina HILTS 2 Sep 1760 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, USA. She was born about 1743 in Little Falls, Herkimer Co., NY. She was the daughter of Christophel HILTS, II and Thorethea Dorothea SNEYDERIN. Maria died after 3 Aug 1780.

There is a gap of 7 years between Nicholas and George so it is entirely possible that there were other children born to this couple.

MILITARY: (DKM) Philip saw militia service during the French and Indian War. Philip Kills appears among the privates on a list headed: Company of Soffrines Deychert 1757 March 20th By an order of Sir William Johnson To march with my Company to Fort William Henery as Followeth Returned home ye 29 Instant. Also, Philip Kils is included as a private on a list headed: Soverinus Deyger's Company. A True List of ye state of my company of Militia who has been on command at ye German Flatts. By Order of Sir William Johnson ye 24th Day of July 1763. As followeth. Vizt: ... (TARSH II:783,792).

During the Revolution, Phillip Kilts served as an enlisted man in the 2nd Regiment of Tryon County Militia under Col. Jacob Klock (Roberts). Fernow shows service as a private for Philip Kilts in the companies of Captains Suts, Klock, and (as Phililp Kitz) under Capt. John Zeely; he was also a corporal in the company of Capt. Kock, all in that regiment.

18 May 1775 Philip Kilts signed a statement, together with many other inhabitants of Tryon County, in support of the Continental Congress.

CHURCH AFFILIATION: (DKM) 8 June 1772 Phillibs Kilts, with others of the Stone Arabia Reformed congregation, signed a call for a minister and subscribed 12 shillings (Vosburgh's transcription of the SAR church records New York State Library pp. 99-101.

In the records of the seat owners of the Stone Arabia Reformed congregation for 1790, Philip Kilts had #27 of the men's seats, #34 on the west side of the women's seats, and #'s 152-3 in the gallery.

REAL ESTATE: (DKM) A tax list dated 1787 on an act of 19 April 1786 for Palatine includes Philip Kiltz (between Adam Kiltz and Nich. Kiltz) assessed 18 shillings. A tax list dated 1788 on an act of 23 October 1787 includes Philip Kils (again between Adam and Nicholas Kils) at Palatine assessed 18 shillings. And a tax list dated 1789 on an act of 1 October 1788 includes Philip Kiltz (once more between Adam and Nicholas Kiltz) in the Palatine District assessed 9 shillings (all New York State Archives and Manuscripts).

18 April 1812 Philib Kils (so signed) of the Town of Palatine deeded to his son John Kils of the same place for $1 in Palatine in the Van Slyck and Depyster Patent beginning at a white pine tree marked for a corner between lot 12 and the deeded lot, running east 63 rods, etc. containing 50 3/4 acres. The deed was witnessed by David I Zeilley and John Zielley (Montgomery County DEEDS, recorded 16 February 1826).

NOTE: Elizabeth Krembs, daughter of Christina Empie and Henrich Krembs, was probably born in Stone Arabia, where her grandfather Johann Ernest (Empey) Emichen was an original Patentee in 1723. Her mother may have been born elsewhere - after Johan Ernst arrived in America (1710 emigration from London) but before he settled in Stone Arabia. She was surely raised in Stone Arabia. Since her daughter Elizabeth sponsored Philip Kilts' and Elizabeth Krembs Kilts' first child, Anna, at the Stone Arabia Reformed Church in 1768, we know these families lived in or near Stone Arabia (HWW).

Known children of Philip KILTS and Anna Elizabeth KREMS are:
