(Easter Morning)
5:30 AM
"Eggies!"
A small voice penetrated Mulder's slumber, and he rolled
towards the sound with a low grumble at the disturbance.
One eye flickered open, and the big, bright red numbers
of his alarm clock blared the time at him. He groaned;
they had only gotten to bed a few short hours ago.
There was a blurry shape just to the left of his night
table, a blurry shape that said again, more insistently,
"Eggies!"
Blinking rapidly to clear his vision, Mulder lifted his
head from his pillow to regard their tousled-haired son,
whose little body was vibrating with excitement. He also
had a suspicious outline of brown around his mouth, a
suspicious outline that looked very much like chocolate.
Chocolate. William's statement suddenly made perfect and
utter sense...it seemed that their son had found some of
his Easter treats already.
"Hey buddy," he said softly, shifting onto one elbow so
he could reach out with his other hand to further tousle
his son's hair. "What's that about eggs?"
"Found eggies!" William declared, and dove onto the bed,
and Mulder's midsection, with an energetic bounce that
drove all the air from Mulder's lungs with a loud 'oof'.
"Eggies! Eggies! Eggies!" William chanted loudly and
enthusiastically as he continued his bouncing.
Beside Mulder, the blanketed lump that was Scully let out
a groan before emerging from beneath her pillow to peer
blurrily at them. "What time is it?" she asked in a
sleep-slurred voice that wobbled slightly from the shaking
of the bed.
William answered before Mulder could, his body coming to
a stop as he stared at his mother with a happy smile. His
blue eyes were wide, his features animated. "Eggies,
Mommy!"
Rubbing her hand over her eyes, Scully smiled and lifted
her hand to touch William on the nose with her index finger
as Mulder informed her of the early hour. "And how many
eggs have you had this morning, William?" she asked their
son in a resigned yet amused tone. A large yawn followed
her question, one she did not bother to hide.
Mulder knew she was probably already planning a nap for
them all, for they had a busy afternoon ahead of them,
including Easter dinner at Maggie Scully's.
"Eggies!" was William's gleefully shouted answer,
accompanied by several more vigorous bounces.
"I'm guessing quite a few eggs," Mulder murmured to Scully
with a grin, "judging from his exuberance." He had
shifted to protect certain assets, and now had his hands
on William to lessen the impact of each bounce.
Their son finally chose to demonstrate his rather
extensive vocabulary with a change in statements, also
boisterously spoken. "Easter Bunny came!"
Scully's left eyelid fluttered and her voice was husky
as she replied, "He certainly did." The glance she gave
Mulder was smoky as she added, "More than once as I
recall."
As did he. Recall, that is. Quite fondly, and rather
proudly.
Their late night of hiding Easter eggs for William had
also been one of playful and bountiful sexual escapades.
They'd learned to take each and every chance for one-on-
one togetherness as it was presented -- for their fully
mobile, extremely agile and, Mulder boasted of with no
small amount of pride, rather stealthy son had made
finding alone-time somewhat of a challenge. Whether it
was the chocolate eggs they had both greedily consumed,
or because there had been something in the air, their
escapades had gone far beyond their normal routine of
late.
"I believe Mrs. Bunny also did quite well," he reminded
her with a waggle of his eyebrows and a leer.
"She did indeed," Scully replied with pure satisfaction,
stretching sinuously beneath the bedding.
Sitting up, he leaned in and pressed a quick kiss on
her smiling lips before lifting William up and onto the
floor. "Rise and shine, Mrs. Bunny, we've got eggs to
hunt!"
Kicking the blankets aside, he swiveled his legs over
the side of the bed, thankful he'd had just enough
energy and sense to put on a pair of boxers before
falling exhaustedly into sleep a few short hours ago.
Not that they tried to hide their nudity from William,
he just felt better having them on with a curious three
year old around.
As he slowly got to his feet, he was aware of Scully
doing the same on her side of the bed. He lifted William
up and watched her slip her robe on over the tee shirt
and panties she had worn as pajamas and then followed her
into the bathroom.
William was deposited onto the counter to watch as they
both brushed their teeth -- he found the process
infinitely fascinating -- and then Mulder watched with
amusement as Scully scrubbed William's face clean of
chocolate, the little boy squirming and protesting the
entire time. Next she picked up his small "Bob the
Builder" toothbrush and squeezed a pea-sized amount of
toothpaste onto it before proceeding to brush William's
tiny teeth, without any struggle.
William used the potty and after Mulder helped him wash
his hands, they headed out into the bedroom to give
Scully some privacy to tend to her own needs. Then it
was her turn to sit with William while Mulder did the
same.
Re-entering the bedroom, he dug a clean tee shirt out of
the drawer and put it on before they headed out to finish
the Easter egg hunt that William had started on his own.
But first William had to show them the chocolate bunny he
had found at the end of his big boy bed, and where he had
found the eggs he had already eaten. Mulder had no doubt
William would have eaten some of the bunny too, if he'd
been able to get the box open. Thankfully, he seemed
content to have them exclaim their wonder and admiration
about it, instead of asking to eat it.
Scully leaned into Mulder and whispered her calculation
of remaining Easter eggs. "There should be twelve more
little eggs and two medium eggs left, I think he only ate
three."
It was a good thing she remembered, his own memory was a
little spotty about where they had hidden the eggs. He'd
been more interested in divesting Scully of her clothing
at the time.
The expression on his face must have given him away, for
she nudged him in the ribs, a faint blush tinting her
cheeks. "I can't remember where my bra is," she whispered,
"so keep your eyes peeled."
He grinned and nodded, one hand coming up to fondle her
behind briefly, out of sight of William. Who chose then
to come and take Mulder's free hand, tugging strongly.
"Eggies, Daddy."
He pressed another quick kiss to her lips before allowing
William to lead him down the hall. Scully trailed behind,
carrying the small basket the Easter Bunny had left for
William to collect his eggs.
Each bright, foil-wrapped egg was held up triumphantly as
it was found, accompanied by either a "Mommy, look!" or
an "Eggie, Daddy!" He placed the eggs one by one in the
basket, carefully as if they might break, after he had
shown them to his parents.
Mulder was slightly amazed that William had managed to
open the little eggs by himself. But then again, he'd
inherited his determination from the both of them.
William located egg number twelve just as Mulder located
Scully's missing bra, hanging from the lamp in the den.
He smiled inwardly; it was funny how Scully's bras always
seemed to land on a lampshade when he tossed them aside.
After waving it over his head and eliciting a horrified
exclamation from Scully, he tossed it to her behind
William's back, whereupon she tucked it into the pocket
of her robe, mock-glaring at him.
They helped William find the last two eggs, both big enough
to fill William's small hands, which were plastic shells
holding a small toy dinosaur, William's newest favorite
animal.
A little persuasion was necessary to stop his insistence
on searching for yet more eggs, since there were none left
to find -- a stubbornness each parent claimed was a trait
of the other -- in the form of William's favorite breakfast.
"Panpakes!"
