U.S. 21 currently links Wytheville, VA to Hunting Island State Park, east of Beaufort, SC. Originally, it linked Cleveland, OH to Jacksonville, FL. Interstate 77 has replaced it as the through route between the Great Lakes and the Southeast. U.S. 22 links Newark, NJ to Cincinnati, OH. Its original endpoints were Elizabeth, NJ and Cambridge, OH. U.S. 23 runs from Mackinaw City, MI to Jacksonville, FL. Originally, its southern terminus was in Portsmouth, OH. U.S. 24 runs from Clarkston, MI to Minturn, CO. Originally, it went from Pontiac, MI to Kansas City, MO. The Michigan portion is signed north-south; from Toledo, OH, the highway is signed east-west. U.S. 25 connects Cincinnati, OH to Brunswick, GA; it originally extended through Detroit, MI to Port Huron, MI. The highway splits into US 25E and US 25W between Corbin, KY and Newport, TN. U.S. 26 runs from Ogallala, NE to Cannon Beach Junction, OR. West of Portland, OR, it is also known as the Sunset Highway. U.S. 27 goes from Fort Wayne, IN to Miami, FL; originally, it extended as far as Sault Ste. Marie, MI. U.S. 28 was a former designation for what is now US 26 between Ontario and Astoria, OR. U.S. 29 runs from Mt. Hebron, MD (west of Baltimore) to Pensacola, FL. A section of the highway between Danville, VA and Greensboro, NC has been designated as Future Interstate 785. U.S. 30 is a transcontinental route that links Atlantic City, NJ to Astoria, OR. It follows the majority of the old Lincoln Highway. |
