U.S. 46 | |||||

AASHTO rules state that no US routes should be less than 300 miles long if they don't cross state lines, and New Jersey is way too small for a route like US 46. So I present to you a reroute and extension through New York City and on to the end of Long Island. US 46 would be diverted onto NJ 3 in Clifton and follow it into North Bergen, at a junction with NJ 495 (old I-495). It would enter Manhattan through the Lincoln Tunnel and connect to the Queensboro Bridge via select surface streets. In Queens, US 46 would replace NY 25A (Northern Blvd.) and multiplex with NY 25 between Wading River and Riverhead. It would take over NY 24 to Hampton Bays and NY 27 to a dead end at Montauk Point, at the eastern tip of Long Island. This would provide a viable route between New Jersey and the Hamptons. Existing US 46 between Clifton and Fort Lee would be redesignated as a state route of your own choice. |
