Exploring

MESOPOTAMIA

Introduction:   You are part of an archaeological team excavating an important site in present day Iraq.  This place was once home to an ancient Mesopotamian culture.  Each member of your team will be exploring different artifacts in order to discover what life was like in this ancient culture.  You will present your findings at an archaeological conference.

Task:  In preparation for your archaeological conference, you will be creating a detailed handout to be shared with other Mesopotamian archaeologists.  Each of you is an expert at some segment of Mesopotamian culture.  You will take on a role, and will only be in charge of fulfilling the duties associated with your role.

Process:  Your first task is to choose a role.  Once you have chosen, click on the link for that role and follow the corresponding directions.

          Your choices:

·        Architect - The Architect will be exploring the ruins of ziggurats and will explain their significance to the Sumerians.

·        Literary Critic - The Literary Critic will be examining a written source (in translation) and analyzing what the source tells us about Mesopotamian culture.

·        Feminist Historian - The Feminist Historian will be exploring written sources for evidence of the role of women in Mesopotamia.

·        Writing Expert - The Writing Expert will examine the ancient Mesopotamian system of writing.

·        Art Historian - The Art Historian will examine Mesopotamian Art and analyze what the sources tell us about Mesopotamian culture.

Evaluation:  Your completed handout will count as a project grade.  You will be graded on whether you fulfilled all of the requirements for your particular role.  You will also be graded on presentation.  The handout should be easy to read and attractive.
