PROJECT OVERVIEW
1. Description of the Community Antique Antique is one of the provinces comprising the island of Panay in Western Visayas. It has a total land area of approximately 2,522 sq. km. Profiled like a seahorse, Antique is an oversized serrated hemline on the western border of the three-cornered scarf-like land mass that is Panay. It lies between the China Sea to the west and a tall mountain range, 155 kilometers long and 33 kilometers at its widest, to the east, separating it from the rest of Panay. The province takes its name from the town of Hamtik, its first capital. It is popularly believed that the name refers to the large red ants called hamtik that abound in the area. Antique occupies the narrow western coast of the island of Panay facing the Sulu Sea. It is separated from the other Panay provinces by the rugged Cordillera, which runs like a backbone along its eastern border with Aklan, Capiz and Iloilo. Mount Madia-as, the highest peak on the island, rises along Antique’s border with Aklan. The land is rugged and mostly mountainous, cut by many short streams that come down from the eastern mountains. There are two distinct climatic regions in Antique. The north experiences an even distribution of rainfall throughout the year. The south is drier as the high mountains shield the area from the monsoons.
2. Summary of the Project Kinaray-artz is a showcase of the province’s music and arts and the artists that preserves the Antiqueño culture. The students wanted to discover the talents of the Antiqueño in local music and arts. The main aim of this website is to preserve the Antiqueño culture by promoting the artists and their masterpiece. It also aims to inspire the people to learn and unite especially the youth to preserve their culture and to hone their talents to bring pride to the province.
3. Our computer and Internet access A. Percentage of students using the internet at home: 3 B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classrooms: 30 C. Connection speed used in the classroom: Smart Broadband D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet: Five E. Additional comments concerning the computer and/or Internet access: Now that our school has 30 computer units, with 10 having Internet connection, both the Special Science Class (SP) and the regular class students take Computer Education as their elective subject and enjoy free Internet access. Activities in relation to the Cyberfair Competition were mostly done at school.
4. Problems we have to overcome: The main problem we encountered is the language. The project is all about local music and arts and the language used is Kinaray-a. We had to make ways in order to make the profile understandable in other places so we had to translate most of the works in English, of course, with the permission from the artists. We also had a hard time in our schedules since SP students are very loaded with their school activities. The project making also coincided with the preparation of the ANS foundation day so we had to work overtime. There are also power interruptions and unstable connection with the internet. Gathering of the information from the artists took a lot of effort but it was worth it.
5. Project Sound Bite See passion the artistic way…
6. How did your activities and research for this International Schools Cyberfair Project support standards, required course work and curriculum standards? The activity for this Cyberfair project was an application of the things we learned in our research, computer education, and in journalism. The knowledge learned through the Internet, photo editing, web designing are the new skills we acquired in the duration of the activities for this Cyberfair project. The different activities we have performed helped strengthen our self-esteem and taught us valuable lessons in interpersonal relationships both inside and outside the classroom, lessons that were very helpful to us during the times when we were searching for the information to be placed in the web page. These lessons helped us with the confidence and the courage to ask and interview officials in the tourism office, the artists themselves, and other resource persons about the topic. The Internet has helped us to be efficient in the use of the Web. It taught us a lot of things and gave us access into the information superhighway. The project has provided the school community and the students with the motivation and the sense of awareness. We are filled with a yearning to know and discover the cultural wealth of our beloved Antique.
PROJECT ELEMENTS 1. What information tools and technologies did you use to complete your Cyberfair project? To get the information first hand, we personally interviewed the artists involved in the project making. The knowledge we gleaned from them proved to be most invaluable, without which the team could not have completed our work. Computers were also an indispensable part in our project. Other technologies used were the phones, scanners, cameras and MS FrontPage software for web design. The aforementioned contributed a lot to the web page. Because of these tools and technologies, the team’s work was not only made easy, it was also made to be informative as it is interesting. 2. In what ways did you act as “ambassadors” and spokespersons for your Cyberfair project both on-line and in person? Through our Cyberfair project, we were opened up to a lot of opportunities to meet and interview several people who possess first hand knowledge about our topic, as well as the key players in our community: the local musicians and artists. Likewise, we acted as the ambassadors to our province of which we are, needless to say, very proud of. It was a tremendous experience for all of us to represent our province and to show to all, that ANTIQUE is one of the best places on earth where talents are found. Naturally, we are honored to be saying that we took part in this worthwhile endeavor. 3. What has been the impact of your project in your community? The team wanted to enlighten there fellow Antiqueños about their rich cultural heritage, and they got that and more. With the experience we gained from this project, we were able to rediscover the past that we ourselves have failed to notice before, and through the website, make it available to everyone else. 4. How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers? It hasn’t been that easy, going back and forth to offices and agencies, but was worth it when several people got involved voluntarily in our project. With the help of our Computer Education teacher Mrs. Jocelyn E. Remonte and computer technician Leonil Gallano, we succeeded in making our project. The team also owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Rodolfo J. Caberoy, Principal II of the Antique National School, Mr. Orlando P. Gallano, Administrative Officer and Teodoro Marzoña, Department Head of Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) for giving us permission to join the Cyberfair and support. Our grateful appreciation to the local artists for the information they shared with us and to other people who helped us in any way to finish this project. 5. Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises We discovered a lot about our culture and local talents through this project. The facts and the stories we unearthed during the course of this project were simply fascinating. Antique was revealed to us not only as the cradle of Philippine civilization but as the home of creative and gifted individuals blessed to live in a serene and rustic community where the verdant mountains meet the pristine seas. On the other hand, we learned to let go of our inhibitions and relate to other people. We found out that a little confidence goes a long way when you’re faced with new people and strange situations. We were also enlightened on the importance of being open-minded when we struggled to complete this project. All of us had our own style, and we all learned to sit down and put our ideas together to create one amazing concept. Most importantly, during the course of this activity, we have acquired a sense of camaraderie and esprit de corps that lead us to develop the kind of team chemistry that our project just needs. Our work also impressed upon us the need for time management and resourcefulness. The lessons learned here would surely be valuable to the team even after we leave school. |
