Introduction
It is a story of a young boy in search of a little red house that
has no doors, no windows, but has a chimney on top with a star inside.
Upon completing this story I take an apple out of the bag. I slice the
apple across the middle, not down through the stem, inside is a star. The
students are amazed. I then slice the apple in many pieces and give each
child a taste of the apple. I have several extra apples, enough for all
the students to have a taste. I explain the week will be filled with apple
research and apple stories.
The
Little Red House With No Doors
Math
We will discuss the apple that has been cut open. I will ask the
students to guess how many seeds there are in the apple. I will cut out
the core and pick out all of the seeds. The students will count as the
seeds as they are picked out. When we are finished , the students will
color a paper. It is a large apple sliced through the center.
The students will glue real apples seeds into the center of
the apple when they have finished coloring.
Science
When the apples seeds have been picked out of the apple. We will
put a few in a zip lock bag, along with a few wet cotton balls. We will
tape it to our classroom window. We will check the seeds daily and chart
the outcome of the seeds.
Taste Test
I will slice the apple and have a few extras so that each student
has a slice of an apple.
Book: Walt Disney: Johnny Appleseed
with Dennis Day
Discuss the man: Johnny Appleseed.
John Chapman, born in 1774, spent most of his life growing apple trees.
On his trips through the Ohio Valley, he often made gifts of apple seeds
and sprouts to the settlers there. As he traveled out west, the indians
and the animals were his friends. He traveled with a pot on his head and
a bag of seeds and a Bible in his sack. His neighbors began to call him
Johnny Appleseed, and that is how we remember him.
Rhyme: Two Little Apples
With hand and body motions.
Way up high in the apple tree
2 red apples smiled at me
I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Mmmmm.... Were they good
Craft: Apple Print
Two apples will be cut different ways. We will cut one across the
middle. We will cut the other down, starting at the stem and ending at
the core. The students will dip these apples in colored tempera and press
them on a sheet of paper. The will use several different colors for the
apple print.
