Alphabet: Students will name the letter Dd and know the beginning sound of the letter Dd. They will identify and name capital and lower case Dd.
Review the following letters: Ll, Oo, Ii, Gg , Hh ,Tt, Pp , Aa, Nn, Mm, Ss, Ff, Rr, Kk, Uu, Zz, Cc, Ee, Yy. Words the students might recognize: log, hog, hot, pot, hat, pat, nat, mat, mop, hit, pit, sit, sap, rat, ran, kit, bat, big, kit, up, pup, hut, zip, zoo, cat, cot. bet, let, pet, set, beg, leg, peg, yak, yam, dog, dig, dug

Colors: Students should name and identifying the following colors: red, yellow, green, blue, purple, orange, black, blue & brown. The students will be learning to say the color words in Spanish along with English.

Our class will discuss and list our 10 indoor and outdoor things that make us unique. We will input our information on the Square of Life Web Site.

Wednesday: Introduce Rocks "Omah Day" 
Omah likes to discuss what rocks mean to her with the students. She then gives information on rock formation and erosion. This is usually a new concept for our kindergarten students. We list all the things we know rocks are used for. Link: Uses of Rocks
Omah gives each student a polished rock. She has each child pick their rock out individually. 
Literature Study: Read and discuss If  You Find a Rock by Peggy Christian 

Objectives: 
Students will get to know their own rock by observing it carefully. 
Students will think of as many descriptive words as they can to describe their rock, while the teacher writes them on the white board. 
Students will weigh rocks on a balance to find the order of the rocks by weight. (Lesson link)

Math: We will introduce addition 0 - 5 this week.
Review: Continue to count orally 1-30 and up, continue to do patterning & sort and classify. Students will use real objects to act as counters to act out story problems.  We will continue graphing using terms such as: fewer, greater than, less than and most. . Shapes: Review things at home that have a rectangle, square, triangle, circle, oval and diamond shape. Money:  The students will identify and name a penny, nickel, dime and quarter.
Numerals: The students will learn to identify the numerals 0 -11 We will continue writing our numerals, 0 -11. Please help your child to continue identifying 0-11.
Counting: Students will need to count to 30 or higher before leaving kindergarten.

Introduction to the Square of Life.
We will pick out our plots for our square of life. We will make our first visit. Each student will draw their square, the sticks, grass, trash, etc.

All students will come to school in the morning. Parents are welcome. Our RIF program will be held in the gym at 9:00 A.M. and all students will go home on the bus at 10 A.M. without a school lunch.

Counting Objects.
Objective: The Students will use manipulative to count, order and group. 
Objective: The Students will develop an understanding of number meaning and relationships.

We will take the students on a walk. The students are told to pick up 10 rocks. After the students return to the room, we sit in a large circle. The students are given individual graphs. They will place their rocks on a graph that has columns of five squares. The students are told to place their rocks on the graph in one column only, one rock per square. They can check their counting and see if they picked the right number of rocks. We then review attributes from the day before. 
The students are asked to arrange their rocks by different attributes. Each student takes turns explaining the reasons why they arranged their rocks in their own individual way.

Arts and Crafts: 
Materials: 

  • 8 by 11 inch tag board 
  • small lima beans 
  • pre-cut ocotillos with flaps to glue on tag board 
  • premed small brown boxes 
  • pre made little people with flaps to glue on tag board 


The students will create a town using small lima beans to represent the rocks in the story. They will glue the beans, boxes and ocotillos on their tag board creating their own town.
