Read: Hiawatha by  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow  Scholastic

Craft: Medallion
The students will choose a picture cut out  of a magazine and cut it out, "Hiawatha's Brothers" (animals). The students will glue an animal picture on a circle (four inch in diameter) (cut out of colored poster board). The students will glue macaroni or shells near the edge of the circle to give it a native american look.  After  the  macaroni dries,  the students will punch a hole in the  medallion  and thread a piece of yarn through it. After tying the yarn, the students can wear it around their necks.

Day 2
Review

Review and list the facts the students can remember about Native Americans.
Discuss being blind. I will remind them of the study of the four senses when they pretended they were blind.

Read Knots on a Counting Rope by

After reading and discussing the Knots on a Counting Rope, give each student a piece of rope. Have each of the students tie one knot in the rope.  Like the little boy's grandfather tied a knot in the rope every time he told a story. They are tying a knot in their ropes because they have heard the story one time.

We will watch the video, Knots on a Counting Rope. It is a reading rainbow video.

Day 3
Review

Review and list the facts the students can remember about Native Americans.

Read  The Legend of the Indian Paint Brush
Discuss the concept of legends and folk tales. List the facts in the story in one column, list the things that seem like fiction in another.

Indian Paintbrush

Craft: Indian Paintbrush
1. Students  will lay a design ( I use glue and create designs on 8" by 10" construction paper and let dry) under a construction paper vase. With  peeled crayons, students will create designs on the vase by rubbing a crayon back and forth over a vase (the dried glue design under it).
2. The students will cut the vase out, glue it on a large construction paper.
3. The students will take a green crayon and draw stems and leaves coming out of their vases.
4. The students will take precut colored shapes and glue on the tops of their stems to create indian paint brush flowers coming out of their vases.
