The demons of Sunnydale won't have Buffy the Vampire Slayer to kick around anymore.

UPN has officially announced the cancelation of the series, as star Sarah Michelle Gellar leaves to concentrate on her big-screen career.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Gellar was close to signing on to the feature film Romantic Comedy. Production on the lovestruck spoof starts in August, ostensibly when Buffy would start filming on its eighth season. The casting news put a stake through Gellar's return to the UPN series.

Then word leaked of Gellar's come-clean interview in Entertainment Weekly's March 7 issue. "Buffy, in this incarnation, is over," said the actress, whose contract expires at the end of this season.

Finally on Thursday, 20th Century Fox Television and UPN confirmed what insiders already knew, production on the series would end this April after seven seasons and 144 shows.

The series finale will air May 20. While Eliza Dushku and Alyson Hannigan are both making crossover appearance on Angel and Buffy, this season there's no word if the titular lovers separated by destiny, several hundred years and network rivalry will finally reunite for the last episode.

"It's hard to believe it's over," said creator Joss Whedon in a written statement released through UPN Thursday. "Well, it's hard to think at all, or stand, or form vowel sounds, so maybe it's time to take a break. I'm just glad I can say we did our best on every single episode. We didn't always succeed, but we never slacked, and I'm immensely proud of my writers, actors and crew for that.

"And I'm proud of what this show means...I truly believe that in years to come, people will look back and say 'that was a show that was on TV.' Yessir. I truly do," said Whedon, who received an Emmy nomination for the creepy classic episode "Hush."

The eulogies were echoed by execs at 20th Century Fox and UPN. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer will go down in history as one of television's best shows and an enduring testament to the vision and genius of its creator Joss Whedon," said 20th Century Fox Television prez Dana Walden. "For seven years, Joss, his team of writers led by Marti Noxon and an extraordinary cast led by Sarah Michelle Gellar captured the cultural zeitgeist and effortlessly combined drama, action and humor. Without question, Buffy will live on for generations to come."

"We have been very fortunate to be the home to such a landmark series, always brilliantly written and acted," chimed in Dawn Ostroff, UPN's entertainment boss. "I'd like to send a special thanks to the remarkably talented actors, producers, writers and crew who worked tirelessly through the years."

Gellar won the role of the Chosen One back in 1997 when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was nothing more than a punchline, based on the box-office bomb starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry (how bummed are they not to have signed on for the series?).

Prior to Buffy, Gellar was best known for her sudsy role as Kendall Hart, daughter of scheming Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) on All My Children, for which she won a Daytime Emmy.

Despite its dedicated fan base, Buffy would never win the thespian an Emmy (or even a nomination, though she was nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe), but during her seven-season tenure Gellar managed to add multiple credits to her résumé. While pulling double duty as wisecracking schoolgirl and vampire slayer, Gellar also moonlighted during her hiatus in movies like Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cruel Intentions, Simply Irresistible and Scooby-Doo.

Gellar's break-neck schedule won't slow down, with the actress slated to begin production on Scooby-Doo Too with husband Freddie Prinze Jr. as soon as Buffy wraps. Warner Bros. is eyeing a summer 2004 release for the sequel with a script already in the works for the third installment of the franchise.

Rumors of Gellar's departure began lurking on the Internet last summer, when news that Buffy's sister Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) would have a larger role in the seventh season, prompting speculation that the demon-battling heroine would pass the stake on to her little sis.

Most recently, Dushku's name was put forward as a possible slayer sub for a potential spinoff series. Dushku joined the Scooby Gang in the third season as rogue Slayer Faith, but an alliance with the dark side put an end to her time in Sunnydale.

Ultimately, the Hellmouth could go unprotected since a rep for the actress just confirmed she's inked a pilot deal with Fox for an untitled project from writer John Feldman, which would see Dushku as a morgue employee who talks to the dead instead of staking them. The corpses tell Dushku's character how they were murdered and every morning she relives the same day, hoping to set things right.

In addition, Buffy's executive producer Noxon has already been tapped for a new one-hour drama next season, leaving the fate of Sunnydale uncertain.

Still producers maintain the possibility that the slayer mythology lives on. According to the statement from 20th Century Fox and UPN: "Discussions regarding the future of the Buffy franchise and a possible spinoff are ongoing." [Message Board]

From E!Online Watch with Kristin
Thanks to Storm for posting once again.

And guest stars Eliza Dushku (who, in case you haven't heard, has turned down a Faith spinoff)...

Eliza Dushku: On Bustin' Loose, Kickin' Butt and Sharin' the Power.

Good God, girl. Those are some serious cuts and bruises. And they look so real! Who did this to you? [Laughs.] Who didn't do this to me? Everyone on this show has gotten a knock in. Faith has really been put through the ringer, but she's been dishing it out, too. Connor got a taste of me.

And Faith is getting out of the slammer. How has prison changed her? Joss and I talked about that...She could've busted out of that joint. She really wanted to, but she and Angel developed this relationship, and he was leading her down the road to redemption and facing the things she's done. I think she's been getting it done, doing the time. I think she's still a tough girl, but she'll suppress her demons a little more. I think we'll see her teetering on the line of the old her and the new her.

Is it nice coming back for Buffy's big (and possibly last) hurrah? That's one of the reasons I wanted to come back. We had word that the show was ending, and I always wanted to go back because Sarah and Joss and everyone are so creative and gave me so much to do. There's great chemistry and dynamics with the characters that we've established over the years. And I've always wanted to come back, but the timing wasn't right until now.

Was it easy jumping back into the role of Faith? More fun than I thought it would be. It's been two years since I've been here, but I really fell back into this role. Which is a little scary, because my girl's crazy.

Yeah, but she's also a badass--one of the strongest female characters on television. It must be such a rush to play her. Absolutely, especially because of the response that we--the show and the writers and me--have gotten. It's amazing how much young girls need and appreciate having this kind of outspoken female they can relate to and look up to and say, "Wow! If she can speak up and say no or stick up for herself..." I've had some amazing stories of girls saying, "If you can do that, I can do this," and it's like, Wow, this is TV versus their real life. And it's stunning it has that effect. There's nothing better than being a badass, and encouraging other girls out there to be badasses in their own right.

On a more personal note, rumor is you're celebrating some sort of big news with your boyfriend? It's kind of under wraps. He's my boy right now, and we're celebrating some personal business. We're not married or nothin'! Everyone's gonna be like, "They're celebrating personal business--she's pregnant!" No! He's my best friend, he's my new stylist, his name is Roman Diaz, and he's great.[Message Board]

Buffy 'to live on with new star'
Before I get started, I would like to apologize to all who have recently posted on the Tagboard. Some messages were automatically cleared by their system, the thing I still don't understand up to now. Just reflecting on their scheme en-RICH-ment is tidy enough. LOL!

Back to the topic. Here's an article from BBC [Faith Spin-off].

Cult TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer will continue with a new star when lead actress Sarah Michelle Gellar departs, according to reports. Eliza Dushku, who has already appeared in the show as Faith, will take over from Gellar who is leaving to pursue her film career, according to the Express newspaper.

Dushku will reportedly keep the role of moody Faith, rather than becoming the new Buffy.

The move would leave the door open for Gellar to come back and make the occasional cameo appearance.

It has not yet been announced when Gellar will leave the series.

Before taking over, Dushku is set to to appear alongside Gellar in the final three episodes of the current series, which is shown on Sky One on Thursdays.

Eliza Dushku will become the show's new star

The show's producers had looked at several different options before settling on 22-year-old Dushku, said the paper.

Other ideas considered included making Buffy's younger sister Dawn the main star.

Gellar decided to leave the show last summer to concentrate on her film career.

She has already starred in the live action film Scooby-Doo, alongside husband Freddie Prinze Jr, and Cruel Intentions.

Gellar made her name with Buffy, which has become one of the most popular teenage TV shows worldwide.

She built up a cult following as a high school student with supernatural powers to hunt down and dispatch vampires.

Dushku is not nearly as well known. She was discovered at the end of a five-month search throughout the United State to play the lead role of Alice opposite Juliette Lewis in the film That Night.

She has appeared in several films and has worked alongside the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro and Ellen Barkin.

Spin-Off
It's weekend. I have more time to update. And to fill-in the days, here's what we have. I just came across this article. And it mentioned about the production president, Christopher Buchanan, in talks about the spin-off.

Another Buffy spin-off?
Faith may get a show of her own
What do you do when the star of your hit television series wants to leave for good? That's the dilemma faced by the producers of long-running fantasy drama, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

But insiders say Mutant Enemy, the company behind the series, has the answer: a spin-off series with rogue slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku), who has a recurring guest role on the show.

While no deal has been signed, production president Christopher Buchanan confirmed he is in talks with Dushku for the untitled spin-off.

Dushku is currently shooting crossover guest spots for both "Angel" (the first "Buffy" spin-off) and the original show, now in its seventh season. Lead star Sarah Michelle Gellar is not expected to return after her contract expires at the end of the current season, choosing to concentrate on her movie career.

Spoiler
More spoilers are coming in. Your option whether to read or not.
Posted by Storm of KINDRED Message Board. View thread and credits here.

The phone rings early in Act 2, shortly after Spike's little fit in the basement. Willow it tending to a nasty gash on Dawn's forehead when Andrew goes to answer the phone. Anya is complaining a bit about how Spike has some kind of "get-out-of-jail-free" card with Buffy that doesn't seem to apply to the rest of them, and Willow and Xander give her comment a "look."

Andrew re-enters, telling Willow that she has a phone call from L.A., from somebody named "Fred." "Guy sounds kinda effeminate."

Later in Act 2, we see Willow standing on the basement stairs, talking to Buffy who is in the basement with Giles, Wood and Spike. Willow tells Buffy that she just got a phone call, and needs to go away for maybe a day or two. Buffy asks if anythings wrong, but Willow tells her that it's nothing she needs to worry about, assurring her she'll give her "the full scoop later," and that hopefully, she'd bring back some good news. Buffy looks at Willow, looks at Spike..."Just hurry back." Willow heads off upstairs, and Buffy starts off towards Spike...

Episode 17 sets up an interesting situation. Giles, Wood, and the SITs are all convinced that Spike is a threat and at any moment the FE could use him as a SIT killing machine. Wood & Giles conspire to kill Spike, Buffy ends up stopping them and has a falling out with Giles over it. Buffy tells them she needs Spike since he's her strongest soldier. With the army of Ubervamps she saw in her vision, she's going to need Spike over Wood or Giles. However, Buffy has no idea Faith is on her way.

Wrong Turn Reviews
Hi guys! Before I advance to Eliza news, allow me to shout "Advance Happy Valentine's Day." Okay, I wouldn't echo to any sappy love, as this not the site-simple-string, but hey, still I'm greeting. *smirks*

Moving on, thanks to Kigga the Wigga of KINDRED Message Board for posting two links for the Wrong Turn review.

Excerpt:
There's a scene in which Eliza and Jeremy are leaping from tree-to-tree, eluding the villains in the black of night. Coincidentally, the first half of the film takes place during mid-afternoon, a time of day that doesn't usually lend itself to horror. Worse, when the sun finally goes down, these kids turn into Greystoke with infrared vision. I'll buy the Monsters with superhuman abilities, but these kids are the same klutzes that accidentally kick over pots and pans while escaping from a shack at ground-level.

This film insults my intelligence. The Inbred Monsters spend an hour trying to kill everything they see, but when they finally get the drop on Eliza, they kidnap her. How many movies have that same inane plot device? Well, they all fucking suck. The only logical reason those Monsters would have to keep Eliza alive is so they can have a nice, warm meal. However, they just tie her to the bed back home, almost waiting for Desmond to come and rescue her.

However, I didn't want Desmond to save her. I wanted that little Kevin Costner-wannabe to haul his gangly ass out of the woods, waving his arms and screaming like the bitch he is. Meanwhile, I wanted to see the Inbred Monsters make Eliza airtight. That's a f****g horror film, Mr. Stan Winston!

More Faith
Sorry for the lack of update. Six days, a bit long? Nah, just a morsel for you to miss me. LOL. Okay, strutting to Faith news, let's twitch right now.

-- Episode 4.13 Salvage
Lorne performs a sanctuary spell for the hotel, while Wesley discovers Lilah's corpse. Her spirit haunts him until he decapitates her fully, keeping his anger well hidden. He then pays Faith a visit and tells her about everything, she smashes her security glass and escapes with Wesley. Angelus and the Beast hear about Faith's arrival and lure her and Wesley to a place where they can meet. Angelus orders some vampires to keep Wesley busy, while he and The Beast take on Faith. Just as The Beast is about to kill Faith, Angelus stabs him and sunlight returns to Los Angeles. It is secretly revealed that Cordelia was controlling The Beast, she allowed him to kill the last remaining totem, and she stole Angelus' soul. As the sun sets, Cordelia confronts Connor and tells him that she is carrying his child. She grabs him and they proceed to have more sex.
-- Episode 4.14 Release
Wesley takes Faith to his appartment, where she has a shower and cleans herself up. Wesley is eager for revenge and tries to make Faith angry by calling her a 'rabid dog', but she doesn't enjoy the violence as much as she used to. Other demons and vampires are not happy about the sun returning to Los Angeles, so Angelus has become very unpopular. Faith and Wesley visit a bar where Angelus was last seen, they question a girl about his current location. When she refuses to talk, Wesley stabs her in the shoulder. This makes Faith surprisingly upset. When the girl finally talks, they discover that Angelus has taken The Beast's place. He now works for Cordelia, who insists to Connor that their child is kept a secret. Angelus enters the hotel looking for a book. He is immune to Lorne's spell, because of an amulet that he is holding. Lorne recognises the amulet to be fake and tells Wesley about a shop that sells them. Wesley and Faith go to the shop, where they see Angelus. He plays with Faith's emotions, he says that she will always be a killer, she could never change. After a very long battle, Faith says "I'm not like you". Angelus gets the upper hand, leans towards her neck and says "soon you will be".
-- Episode 4.15 Orpheus
Angelus is feeding on Faith when suddenly he faints. Faith had earlier injected a drug into her blood, making it very lethal. Faith is very near death. She is brought back to the hotel along with a now captured Angelus, who is locked in his cage. Faith is in a coma state, and Angelus is unconscious. The gang are watching over Faith, while keeping an eye on Angelus. We are taken into Angelus' mind, where he and Faith are watching Angel perform good deeds. Willow arrives at the hotel, ready to restore Angel's soul. She performs a spell which requires concentration, Cordelia is countering the spell from her room, but Willow overpowers her and the soul is set free. Everyone is still clueless about Cordelia, including Willow. After being released, Angel is now able to commune with Faith and Angelus in the dream. He and Faith take on Angelus together, but Faith gets badly beaten. She is close to giving up, when Angel gives her some pep talk. As we are taken back to reality, we can see Faith shaking and crying in her coma. Suddenly, she gets up and walks down to the basement of the hotel. She stops Connor from staking a sleeping Angelus, right before the spell registers. Angel wakes up, dazed and confused. Willow tells Faith and the gang about the recent events in Sunnydale, then she leaves, taking Faith with her.

Faith Spin-off
E! News Live has mentioned about the spin-off and Storm from KINDRED Board was able to catch it.

Quoting Storm:
"Okay, this is not exactly an article, but last night I was watching E! news live and they mentioned that the producers of Buffy are interested in doing a Faith ('good Slayer turned bad, turned good', heh, spoilers much?) spin-off. They haven't confirmed if Eliza is interested yet, but they did say that Nicholas Brendan and James Marsters would definitely be on it. Alyson also hasn't confirmed."
