"Lori Brown-Mirabal does it all " by Ed Wetschler
MILFORD, PA -- The mezzo-soprano Lori Brown-Mirabal will perform at Dingman-Delaware Middle School on
November 14 at 3 p.m. Accompanied by Grammy nominee Allison Brewster Franzetti, she'll sing music from the worlds of opera, spirituals, and Broadway.
Brown-Mirabal is known to movie buffs as the opera singer in The Secret Lives of Dentists (2003) and as a solo artist in the PBS Great Performance documentary, Aida's Brothers and Sisters. But actually, she has spent much of her time performing live, appearing with Placido Domingo, the late Luciano Pavarotti and Cab Calloway, and other stars of opera, jazz, and Broadway.
After seeing Brown-Mirabal portray the goddess Diana in Iphigenie en Aulide, The New York Times's Bernard Holland wrote, "Lori Brown-Mirabal's moment as Diana warmed the stage as no one else managed to do." When she performed the title role in Bizet'sCarmen in France, Le Telegramme's critic said, "Throughout the presentation the audience could not keep their eyes from Lori Brown-Mirabal." The conductor himself said, "this sort of Carmen has not been seen in a long time, and it will not be reproduced for a long time to come."
Brown-Mirabal's "Songs of Love, Faith and Passion" program includes popular arias like "The Habanera" from Carmen and "My Man's Gone Now" from Porgy and Bess, and show tunes like "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady. Accompanist Allison Brewster Franzetti won Grammy nominations for her CDs Tango Bar and 20th Century Piano Sonatas) and, in 2008, for Best Instrumental Soloist Without Orchestra. She has performed with Sir James Galway, Eugenia Zukerman, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the City of Prague Philharmonic, and other luminaries of classical music, and will play some Liszt and Debussy solos at the concert.
