| HARE KRISHNA This weeks SPIRITUAL TEACHINGS focus is on HARE KRISHNA. From the time of my young youth, I would hear people joking about the HARE KIRSHNA teachings and see them portrayed in movies as "weird and strange" people. Bieng the inquisitive mind that I am , I decided to research the HARE KRISHNA spiritual and philosphical teachings. I always try to remember that you can never truely understand the 'unknown' unless you educate yourself and keep an open mind. These are my findings WHAT IS HARE KRISHNA? KRISHNA means "all attractive" and is the name of the SUPREME. HARE KRISHNA teaches the anything that may attract you gains its source and comes from the SUPREME. The SUPREME is also known as RAMA and literally means "the highest eternal pleasure". The word HARE ( pronounced huh - ray ) is a call to KRISHNA'S DIVINE ENERGY. They believe that just as the sun shines forth to us through it's energies like heat and light, The SUPREME reveals himself through his multitude of energies. They teach that the SUPREME is the source of everything( of all life ) , then whatever we see and what we dont see, belongs to the energy of the SUPREME. They teach that if we put ourselves in harmony with KRISHNA and KRISHNA's ENERGIES that we return to our natural , pure state of consciousness. This is called and refered to as "KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS". KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS is not something imposed on the mind. They teach that is is already inside each of us, waiting to come out. Chanting "HARE KRISHNA" brings out that natural, pure state of the mind. The HARE KRISHNA believe that humans are all pleasure seeking creatures, and that we are all seeking KRISHNA ( or the RAMA , "the highest eternal pleasure"). They chant HARE KRISHNA as a way of seeking KRISHNA directly. The HARE KRISHNA chant is called a MANTRA and is a vibration of sound that cleanses the mind, freeing it from anxiety and illusion. They teach that the MANTRA can be chanted by anyone no matter what religion , nation, color, or sex. PHILOSPHIES OF THE HARE KRISHNA YOU ARE NOT YOUR BODY HARE KRISHNA teaches that we all have and will live many lives. The spark of awarness within us ( the soul , the self) has no beginning and no end. It can not die. It is forever. The human body is not forever, and eventually dies. So that spark of life keeps moving from one body to the next. They teach that at one time we have a body of a child, and then we move to the body of a young person, then we move to the body of a middle aged person, and then to the body of an old person. Yet, in all of those bodies, you feel yourself to be the same. They teach that the spark of life never changes, only the body changes. SO, if the spark ( the real you ) never changes, but yet your body changes, YOU ARE NOT YOUR BODY. They teach that the final change of body is "death', but that is not the final state of the spark. They teach it is only a transition , or another move. Just as you change throughout your life from childhood to old age, at death you move on to continue the cycle. Meaning you are born again into a new body. THE PURE WAY OF LIFE HARE KRISHAN teaches living the pure way of life and to follow four specific rules , in order to achive that 1. NO GAMBLING HARE KRISHNA teaches Krishna Consciousness ( purifying of the mind ) to make the mind clear and steady for spirirtual realization. They believe that gambling makes the mind cloudy and agitates it. 2 NO INTOXICANTS No drugs, no alchol, no coffee, tea, or cigarettes. They teach that the world is already high on illusion, greed , false power and ego. A devotee of KRISHNA wants to be thoughtful and sober Material substances , like drugs, are thought to be a hinderance in Spiritual realization. Inxoicants bend the mind, not free it. They teach the the self within us is by nature joyful and that the aquiring of material substance does not make us happy. They teach that purifying ones self will uncover the happiness that is already there. 3. NO MEAT EATING No meat, fish, or eggs. The HARE KRISHNA see each creature on this earth as spiritual biengs and the children of the Supreme. They stand against violence of any kind and killing to eat is forbidden. 4. No Illict Sex Only sex within marriage and for the creation of children is allowed in HARE KRISHNA. They teach that sex brings entanglement, exploitation, disappointment and illusion.
