GM Rhee: “Sad to part with Weeks, but thrilled with Garcia”

Cubs looking to go all the way

By Ray Leonard / Leiden Cubs MML

The Cubs took another step toward a success in 2003 after they acquired Freddy Garcia and

a 2005 draft pick in exchange for Rickie Weeks, Carlos Hernandez and Brandon Lyon. The

acquisition of Garcia could be huge for the Cubs because it gives them a very solid starting

rotation. In a press statement, Cubs GM Rhee was quoted: “I think we can go all the way”.

Over the last few weeks a lot of teams came asking for high rated second base prospect

Rickie Weeks. It looked liked the Cubs didn’t want to trade the youngster and he was brought

up to the majors. On the same day that Weeks arrived in Leiden, he heared he was traded to

Las Vegas. Rhee: “We certainly had big plans with Rickie in Leiden, but this trade was

something we just had to do”.

There was a rumour that Weeks was going to take over as the starting second baseman in

Leiden, which would’ve meant Soriano had to move shortstop or DH.

On the acquisition of Garcia, Rhee said: “We thought we already had a solid rotation, but

Freddy is an exceptional pitcher. We’re thrilled to have him here in Leiden for the years to

come”. Garcia who turns 26 in June told he’s very happy to be on a contending team. “I’d love

to go all the way with this team, I have high hopes”.

Garcia will take over as the number two starter in the Cubs rotation, behind Roy Oswalt. Hideo Nomo moves up one day and

Tim Wakefield will be used as a swingman.
