FAMILY NAME HISTORY ROCKETTE The Old French
name "Rochette", was introduced into Britain by
the Norman French under their victorious commander,
William The Conqueror in the year 1066. The holders
of the name settled in Britain after the conquest and the
name became established and anglicized into Roach, along
with several variants including Roch, Roche, etc.
The suffixe "..ette, ..ett",, signify a
feminine diminutive version of the name, giving us an
affectionate term "the dear little daughter
of..". When translated literally from the Old
French word "roche", meaning "dweller by
the rock", the toponymic origin of the original word
is revealed referring to a distinction of the landscape
or local area at which the initial bearer of the name
dwelt or held land. The fashion of adding surnames
began in the thirteenth centry when the population was
expanding repidly and there was a concerted movement from
the countryside into the towns and villages. It had
beome necessary to be able to distinguish reliably
between individuals for reasons of commerce, land
transactions, and the need for complete and accurate
public records, and a number of methods evolved including
this one, thus affording the bearer a suitable means of
identity in his local community. The earliest written reference to the name or a variant dates back to the year 1086, when the name of John de Roches in mentioned in the domesday book for the county of Bedfordshire. In 1249, Lucas des Roches, from Les Roches, in the Seine Inferieur District of France, was recorded in Hampshire. The earliest record of introduction of the name into North America dates back to 1627, when Margery Rockett married Eltweed Pomeroy, from Michigan, and the wealthy and influential pomeroy family dynasty was begun. In 1672, Giles Rockett emigrated to Virginia, where he worked for John Sayer under a four year contract. |
