Hooks, you can buy so many kinds of hooks these days, one's for Meat, Maggots, Bread and Sweetcorn to name a few, so here are just the main designs. For a more details see your local tackle dealer. |
Spade or Eyed. These are the two shapes that you will come across. A Spade End is flattened spade-like shape at the top of the shank to prevent the knot slipping off when whipped on correctly. These hooks can be trickier to tie, if you struggle to whip a neat spade knot, you can alway use a Spade End hook tyer. These can be bought quite cheaply for you local dealer. See picture below. Eyed Hooks These can much easier to tie. The hook has a small ring at the top of the shank. Again these hooks range in size and shape. The sizes range from 2-26 the smaller number the bigger the hook. Do not forget that when buying hooks that both shapes and sizes are sold for Barbed and Barbless Barbed hooks have a barb pointing backwards from the point. You should always check if you are allowed to use barbed hooks on the lakes that you fish. In many cases the rules state that only barbless hooks are to be used. I always use barbless hooks , May I suggest you do too. Hook To Nylon If you are all fingers and thumbs with small hooks, or you can not master the hook tyrer, there is a great selection of ready tied patterns. these cover most methods and baits, also offering a wide range of breaking strains to deal with varied species. One drawback it's is an expensive way of buying hooks. |
