Have you ever wondered where all the rain goes after it has fallen?
A lot of it runs into our rivers. If is polluted on the way, then that can mean disaster for a river system.
How can rainwater become polluted?
Rainwater can become polluted when spillages occur and harmful products contaminate the surface water that the rain becomes.
Spillages can occur from a number of sources.
Oil and chemical leaks can occur from industrial estates. These come either from factories that use chemicals in processing or from oil washed from car parks and garages. This can pollute surface water. The surface water has to go somewhere, partly in to drainage systems, but some of it runs directly from the land into the river systems.
Chemicals can be spilled in road accidents. The emergency services disperse them but this in effect only breaks the chemicals down, it does not get rid f them. Eventually the dispersed chemicals find their way into the river system.
Sometimes farms and gardens are responsible for pollution. Rain can wash pesticides and fertilizers from crops directly into rivers.
.
Waste water from homes and factories travels to water treatment plants via our sewage system. Sometimes there are breaks or leaks in these pipes and contaminated water escapes. This water contains all sorts of nasty things such as waste from out toilets. It also contains high levels of chemicals such as the powders from our washing machines and all disinfectants and cleaning chemicals we use to keep our houses clean.
