After a visit to the Swan Sanctuary at Egham last Autumn, Steve Gray of Sunbury on Thames who is a National Federation of Anglers Coach, decided to do something positive towards conservation and the education of the young anglers that he teaches.
Hearing that Walton Bridge   area of the Thames is a particularly bad spot for discarded rubbish, yesterday the 24 June, his little fishing group of youngsters carried out a litter pick along the car park area and towpath. Spelthorne Civic Pride provided them with litter pickers and black sacks and disposable gloves. The intense heat of the day did not deter them in their enthusiasm. Several black sacks were filled with litter. Numerous tin cans, plastic bags, old fishing line and even used nappies were collected. The young people were disgusted at the careless way the riverside is treated.
The Swan Sanctuary highly commends the pro active approach of this fishing coach, as through the year so many of our wildlife suffer through the thoughtless actions of us humans.
This was a marvellous example of what just a few youngsters can do to redress the balance. Many adults could take note, and hopefully follow their lead.
