Because in 1988 I wrote an essay for my friends about how King Kong represents my philosophy of life and I decided to call my new band King Kong. You know the story. King Kong was a movie from the 1930s about a giant ape that lived on a primitive island where he was worshipped by the natives and then the white people came and captured him and took him to New York where he escaped and climbed the Empire State Building clutching a blond girl named Fay Rae in his paw. The story isnt so important as is the whole idea of King Kong. Hes big, primitive, natural, supernatural, funky, freaky, hairy, misunderstood, brutal, gentle, evolutionary, passionate, African, and tragic. Just like our music. We play it funky, funny, repetitive, rythmic, melodic hypnotic, serious, mysterious, bluesy, emotional and conceptual. Our concert should make you feel like you are one of the those natives who are performing an ancient ritual dancing under the torchlight to manifest the spirit of King Kong into a physical reality.
Are there others in your band ?
King Kong started out as a three piece rock band. The group has been through a number of incarnations since including female vocals, organ, congas and now our latest non human edition, a computer. Would you like to be a part of the Kong ?
I live in Chicago to be close to our record label, Drag City but we are still a Louisville band at heart. One could say we are a dual citys-ship band. But we also tour all around the USA and Europe. Next month we will travel to New York where I can stand in the shadow of my alter egos favorite climbing post, the Empire State Building.
