Biography
Believed to be an orphan, Hwoarang was raised on the streets of Seoul after being adopted by the Korean Killing Hawk himself, Baek Doo-San. Baek trained the young man in the tae kwon do martial arts, and Hwoarang soon became one of his best students, not to mention a close friend. The Blood Talon, as he came to be known as, ran a fradulent street fighting gang on the side; this was his primary way of making money and wasting time. He noticed a young Japanese girl attending Master Kuwabara’s School of Karate eighteen months ago, but never had the opportunity to speak with her until a chance encounter one night. After a bike race and a fight, Hwoarang thought he would never see her again; later that same night, Kitsune showed up at Baek’s dojang to alert them of Kuwabara’s murder at the hands of Toshin, the Mexican fighting deity.During a rematch, Kazama Jin burst into the scene, knocking Hwoarang away from Kitsune, then challenged the young man to a fight. The two fought to a draw; angry with himself, Jin, and Kitsune, Hwoarang left to tell Baek of the outcome. Later that same night, Baek meets his demise during a battle with Toshin; when both Hwoarang and Kitsune show up at the flame-ridden building, she tells him of the third Iron Fist, then invites him to join up. He decides to enter the tournament in order to avenge Baek’s murder, get a rematch against Kazama Jin, and to admit the truth behind his feelings for Kitsune.

The Devil’s Moon had been the closest he had ever come to death, but Hwoarang managed to come out of it alive, and rescued Kitsune from the wrath of the Devil-possessed Jin, with the aid of Angel. The couple returned to Korea, where Hwoarang was immediately drafted into the Army, and housed at the Panmunjom base, where his fighting prowess and attitude earned him a place in the Special Tactics Unit. Hwoarang hated the military life though, and missed everything about life on the outside. During a botched raid to the P’yongyang military base in North Korea, Hwoarang is forced to kill a Communist soldier; his emotions are turned upside down when he discovers the man he’d killed was his own father.Filled with guilt over the murder, hatred for the military, and his desire for life on the outside, Hwoarang escapes the military, reuniting with Kitsune. However, the Devil that had reawakened Kazama Jin at the conclusion of the Iron Fist has been plaguing Kitsune as well, and wreaks havoc on both Hwoarang and Kitsune’s lives, testing them. Around this time, the couple finds out about the fourth Iron Fist, and decide to enter, feeling the answers to their questions will be found there.
