2007 Rocky Mountain Replica Roundup
It was a dark and stormy night, the captain said to me, “tell me a story my son”.  So I began: It was a dark and stormy night, the night before the show and I realized that this was the one thing that could truly upset our plans.  The next morning, the rain had stopped, but the clouds were just as threatening.  We continued with our plans, with the “show must go on” attitude but after we setup, we decided to cut the show short by an hour in case the rain wanted to return later in the afternoon.  Our worrying was for naught though, because by the time the show was wrapping up, the sun came out and we started to get sunburned.

Our turnout was better than expected with 30 cars entering the show and most people I talked to feel it was a great sucess.  Although we parked the cars as they came in, we were able to organize them in some categories.  We had a section for the Ferrari replicas, another section for the off road kits such as dune buggies and Hummer replicas, and a third section for the Cobras (later dubbed the “snake pit”).  Miller Motorsports came and entered two cars in the show which were displayed prominently in front of the park, and John Gates even took the time to trailer in his partially completed Lamborghini kit which also stayed out front on the trailer.

As the day progressed, we handed out “Peoples Choice” ballots to the folks entering the park, and many of them returned with their votes for their favorite car of the show.  The rest of the awards were chosen by those of us who had entered cars in the show, and each person had a chance to select two cars in each category.  This was set up so even if the person voted on their own car, they would still have to select another entry as well.  The awards were given out around 2:30pm with the following results:

Best Neo-Classic: Ron Schlattman, 1934 Mercedes
Best Off-Road: Evan McKenna, Wombat (Hummer replica)
Best Cobra: Jerry Alley, 427 SC Cobra
Best Sports Car (Non-Cobra): Jeff Price, CMC Porsche Speedster
Best Paint: Tim & Debby Booth, 427 SC Cobra
Best Engine: Bob & Michelle Cowen, Cobra
Best Interior: Dan Barbee, Magnum Dino 246 G.T.
Best In Show: Tim & Debby Booth, Cobra
Peoples Choice: Larry LaGrange, Porsche Speedster

As I said, we broke up around 3:00, but a few of us stayed around to answer questions.  Ron Schlattman wanted to leave earlier, but people kept coming by to talk to him and he didn’t leave ‘till about 4:30.

There are some people I would like to thank for helping to make this show possible:

• Ron Schlattman and Dusty Johnson who purchased the trophies for the show.
• Rick Orton and the Mile High Cobra Club.  Without their help with the insurance, this show may not have happened, or the entry fee would have been twice what it was and probably no one would want to enter.  He also helped promoting it throughout his club and as a result we had a good Cobra turnout.
• Mike Stevens and Jeff Price who helped me parking cars through the morning of the car show.  Thanks guys!!
• All of the folks who entered cars in the show.  I know with our busy lives, it’s hard to commit an entire Saturday to a car show, but with the numbers of people who came out, it looks like we should be able to put this on again next year.
