Baby Bumper (Look at alternitive ideas below)

The finished bumper will fit a standard 27"X52" crib.
YOu will need enough fabric for eighteen 10 1/2"X9 1/2" rectangles for the patchwork side
1 and 3/4 yards of 45inch wide solid color fabricfor the outside
8 and 1/2 yards of 1/2-inch trim
one bag of full iszed extra loft polyester batting
kraft paper
sewing mahine
basic sewin supplies

Pre wash fabrics; dry, and iron.
From kraft paper. make a 10 1/2"X9 1/2" template; use to cut 18 rectangles from fabric.
ut solid color fabric into two 10 1/2"X52 1/2" and two 10 1/2X27 1/2" retangles.
Cut batting into four 9 1/2"X 51 1/2" and four 9 1/2"X26 1/2" rectangles (for double layer)
Cut trim into twelve 12" lengths for ties and one 4 1/2 yd strip for piping.
Arrange patches in desired order.
Pin long sides together, right sides facing; sew into one long panel.
Measure against the inside of the crib as you go; panels that fall short on sides of the crib will need a seam allowance of about 1/4"; those on the long sides 1/2"
With patchwork panel right side up. lay trim for piping aling the top edge; pin in place.
Stich with long zig zag aling the edge.
Remove pins.
Measure and mark placement for ties (top and bottom corners of crib and two at top on each long side where bumper meets crib slats)
Cut two ties in half ; pin halved tie to piping at each top and bottom end corner.
Fold remaning ties in half; pin in place to top of piping.
Tack ties with zigzag stich.
Pin 2 layers of batting to worng side of colid color rectangles; hand baste near edge.
Make one long panel.
Oin short sides of rectangle together, alternating sizes.
Sew with 1/4" seam allowance.
Lay patchwork pannel right side up; place solid color pannel right side down, on top.
Pin on three sides, leaving one short side open (make sure ties are sandwiched inside and loose ends don't stray into seam)
Sew together with a 1/4" seam allowance, catching piping trim and folded ends of ties in stiching.
Remove basting stiches.
Carefully remove all pins.
Turn bumper rightside out; press edges flat.
Tuck in raw edges of open side, pin, and hand sew the opening closed.
Remove pins.
Press edges.

ALTERNITIVE IDEAS:
Instead of using printed colored fabric on the patchwork side, use light colored pastel fabric.
Let the new big brother or big sister draw pictures with fabric paints for the new baby.

Or for a BABY SHOWER you can do the same with fabric pens and let the guests each write a blessing for the baby.
