Kit awoke with a large yawn and looked around his room. Still the dank, musty house he moved into, but he liked it, because it was his. All his life, he couldn’t remember owning anything except for the cloths he woke up with. Actually, he couldn’t even remember his life more than a year ago. He had washed up upon the shores of Great bay in a strange land called Termina. But for the past year his life had become smooth and easy to cope with, considering he hadn't met a single soul that looked anything like him. He got up, put his shirt and slacks on and opened his door; the sweet homely smell of musty air, cobwebs, and sea breeze filled his nostrils and spread a smile on his face.
“Time for work” he said to no one in particular.
He climbed the stairs and exited his underground home. The large, hard to climb ramp was easy now, he had taken an old fence and laid across the small hill, so he could get to the top, and to the beach. Goddess forbid a wave ever hit the beach too hard; his house would be flooded instantly. “Must be why no one lives here,” he thought to himself. But he took his chances, and trusted the gods would protect him against such a tragedy. He walked out the front door and shivered, the morning air was cold, yet soothing. He began to walk up the path that would lead him to Clock Town. He was a delivery boy; he was paid well by Mr.Barten. His life seemed to make sense, but there was something missing. He was a species unknown to every being he talked to. What he did know was he was looked strikingly similar to a mouse, for he had the face of a mouse, the fur, the tail, yet the bipedal body of a regular human. His looks and features, so far, diddint seem to bother anyone, yet deep inside, he wished that he could meet someone like him, an outcast, someone just as lonely as he was. About a half-hour past and he was at the west entrance of clock town, he entered, a guard greeted him. He saw many people, more than had been here when he first came here a year ago, something about the moon going to wipe out existence, so no one had come to last years carnival of time. But this year was different. This year, Clock town was packed with people of all species, such as gorons, Zoras, and he could even see a Gerudo at the bank, hopefully not robbing it. He continued into south clock town, the carnival was in 3 days, and he knew things were going to be loud and busy with all these tourists. By the time he reached the Milk bar, the clock tower read 9:00. “Right on time” he said to himself. He opened the door, looked around and spotted Mr.Barten.
“Kit! Perfect timing! I really need you to go to romani ranch and get some chateau romani, I am fresh out and this place is going to be packed tonight.”
Kit nodded, doing his job without question. He was paid for it, what more could he ask for?
Another 2 hours had past when he finally reached Romani ranch. He heard a voice, a sweet, innocent voice, and a song he had never heard before. He looked to see where it was coming from, he had never been to romani ranch before, so he had no idea who worked here, he pictured a tough old farmer with a pitchfork and that tired gleam in his eyes, but instead, he looked over near a cow, and saw her…
She was beautiful. Her long pink dress, her slender soft arms, and that orange hair that hung down the small of her back. But her voice, her voice was incredible; it sounded like the goddesses would sound is they were to sing. She turned around, and looked at kit. He blushed, but could not look away; she had a sweet smile, one that could warm even a dodongo’s heart. It seemed like an hour had past before he brought up the nerve to talk to her, yet it was only about a minute. “I, Uh… milk. BLAH!”
She giggled.
“Hello! Aren’t you Mr.Barten's new errand boy? Well, nice to meet you! I am Cremia. This is romani ranch, welcome!”
Kit could have melted like a Chu Chu on the sun. He began to sputter out a few more words.
“Nice. Uh. Ranch!”
She once again giggled.
“You’re here for milk, right?”
“Yea…” kit replied.
“Okay, come with me to the barn, I have Mr.Barten's shipment waiting for him. You can use my wagon if you like!”
“Uh. Kay.” He spit out. It was quite hard to talk to her. He wanted to say things that he felt, but he brushed it back, knowing he would never be allowed true happiness.
On the way to the barn, he saw a smaller version of Cremia; the little girl ran up to kit and did a little curtsy.
“Hello!” She said cutely “I'm Romani! I was given the same name as the ranch! What’s your name?”
“Uh, Kit.” He said.
“Ohhh, that’s a nice name, but can Romani call you Kitmouse? You look like a mouse! Tee hee! So Kitmouse it is! Romani is practicing once again for tonight!”
“Tonight?” Kit asked wondering what was wrong
“Tonight” she replied, “they’re coming, again….”
Kit was confused. Thinking it was a little kid game or something, he mused her by asking about “them”
“Well,” Romani replied, “they come riding in on a big shining ball, a whole lot of em! They go for the barn and get the cows! A little boy named Grasshopper helped me last year, but Romani doesn’t know where he is, so can Kitmouse help Romani protect the cows?”
Kit laughed a bit
“Sure kid, just let me deliver your sisters milk first, when I return the wagon, you can tell me all about it!”
Romani giggled much like her older sister, and began shooting arrows at an odd looking balloon.
Cremia pulled the wagon out of the shed and set up some milk bottles inside.
He climbed up and grasped the reigns of the horse and headed toward the gate leading to milk road.
Another hour had passed; Kit got to Clock town and gave the delighted Mr. Barten his milk. Then returned to Romani ranch. He dropped off the wagon in front of the barn, and began to think about what the little girl Romani said. About. “Them” what did she mean? Kidnappers? Going after the cows?
He didn’t know. But he had an odd feeling any way. He had his own weapon, a crossbow. So if there were any trouble he would protect the ranch. Cremia walked out of the house and greeted him. “Would you like to stay a while with us?” She asked
Kit was shocked and elated. “Yes I would!” He replied.
Hours had passed, Cremia told kit of the almost disaster that happened last year on the eve of the carnival, the moon, almost crashed into the Clock tower. But some boy had gone inside the moon and fought off whatever caused the dilemma. Peace returned to Termina. It was around 8:00 when Kit decided he had over stayed his welcome.
“Um, Kit.” Cremia said. “It’s pretty dangerous to go out this late, would you like to sleep here at the ranch tonight?”
Kit almost jumped in excitement, but fought it back, keeping his dignity and aura of wisdom.
“Yes, I would” he replied politely.
Sure, it was a bale of hay, but none the less, this was comfortable. Kit slept in the barn with a chicken and 3 cows, the mooing and clucking did not bother him, he felt at home in the barn.
At about 2:00 in the morning the door opened and Romani busted in saying “its almost time!!! They’re coming!!!”
Kit could tell by her voice, this was no childish game.
He calmed her down and stepped out side. A ball of blinding light descended from the heavens. About a dozen purple glowing creatures appeared all over the ranch.
Romani took out her bow and immediately began shooting them, each one she shot exploded, but another appeared in its place.
Kit retrieved his crossbow and without question began firing at each of the floating things.
More and more appeared.
“How long do we have to do this? I’m running out of arrows!!!” Kit yelled
“Just till the sun comes up, LOOK OUT!”
One of them was behind the barn, just before it touched the wall, kit shot an arrow right into the creature’s head, and it exploded in a blinding flash.
The battle continued for another 3 hours, Romani seemed to have an unlimited supply of arrows. Then the crack of dawn appeared. Every floating creature burned up, and the shining ball flew away…
Romani sighed and said. “We did it! We saved the cows! I owe you so much! Thank you Kitmouse!”
Kit nodded with a smile, then went back into the barn and began to think about what just happened.
The chicken crowed and woke kit up. He was startled, but refreshed. He saw that Cremia and Romani were pulling the wagon back outside again.
“What’s going on?” He asked.
“Oh, Romani has never been to the carnival of time before! So my friend Anju is taking care of her for the next couple day so she can see the fireworks show and all.”
Romani giggled
“Yep! Romani is goanna be at the carnival. Are you coming Kitmouse?”
Kit stuttered. “Well, I don’t know, I'm not good in crowds….
“Then stay here and help me!” Cremia shouted, “uh, I mean, well, if you’d like, it will be kind of lonely and I could use your company, if its alright with you Kit.”
Kit smiled.
“Of course, I like this ranch!”
Cremia giggled and climbed onto the wagon.
“Can you stay here while I take Romani to town?”
Kit nodded
“No problem.”
Several hours had past when Cremia came back. Kit had been reading a book on cow breeding in her room.
He walked down the steps. She smiled and began to cook a meal.
“Thank you, Kit, I’ve, well, I’ve never really felt this way… I’m so glad you here with me. I get so lonely sometimes, and although I love my sister, she’s not always the best company.
Kit nodded.
“Where are you from?” She asked.
Kit simply replied “the beach”
“No, I mean, where were you born?”
Kit looked down.
“I don’t know. I washed up on great bay a year ago. And I have no memory of where I came from…”
Cremia looked as if she were about to cry.
“That’s so sad! Do you remember your parents?”
Kit didn’t answer.
“No. I have no parents… I don’t know where I came from.”
Cremia put her arms around him. He shivered a little, feeling content.
“That’s so sad. My father died about 3 years ago. And my mother died a while before that. Romani doesn’t remember her, but I do. Mamuyan says I look just like my mother.
Mamuyan owns the dog racetrack on the other side of the ranch…”
Kit sat down and began to eat the soup she had prepared.
“Chicken soup?” He asked
“Yup! 100% Romani bred chickens in every bite! He he he!”
Kit laughed as well.
They began talking about different things, and kit was surprised to find out they actually had a lot in common.
“Kit.” She said. “I like you. I haven’t really ever liked a guy. Mr. Barten is like a father to me, the only other men I know are the Gorman brothers, but I really don’t like them…”
Kit nodded. “I don’t know enough people to judge anyone. Mr. Barten supplies me with my pay, and the mayor talks to me sometimes, other than that, I'm not a very popular person…”
Cremia looked hurt.
“You seem so lonely.” She got up and hugged him
He hugged her as well.
“It’s getting late…” Cremia said. “You can sleep in Romani’s bed tonight”
Kit shook his head.
“Id rather sleep in the barn, I like it there!”
Cremia laughed.
“Well, my room doesn’t smell like cow dung you know!”
Kit laughed again
“I know, but I like the feeling of animals around me, thanks anyways Cremia.
Kit kissed her on the cheek, and retreated to his bale of hay.
It had been two days since he left his musty house on the bay. Yet he felt like he had been living at Romani ranch forever. He felt at home here, he felt like he fit in.
He spent the next day exploring the ranch, Grogs chicken shack, and Mamuyan's doggy racetrack.
He even peeked into the Gorman ranch. Every little thing amazed him. Its funny how new things can make one so happy and fill with wonder. Kit returned to the house for dinner. Cremia had prepared a wonderful meal, with a side of milk. The milk seemed to sparkle.
“Drink it,” she said.
So kit drank it. It tasted wonderful, not like regular milk.
“Its called chateau romani” Cremia said. “It’s rare milk only I make. Its Mr. Barten’s customers favourite.” She smiled seeing how much kit liked it.
The meal ended rather quickly, and Cremia Motioned for kit to come outside, she climbed a ladder that led to the top of the house, and kit followed her.
She sat on the hay that comprised the roof, straightened out her dress and patted the hay on the side of her, motioning for kit to sit.
He gladly sat next to her.
“What was the point of bringing me up here?” Kit asked
Cremia pointed up.
“The stars are beautiful, well, they will be soon, and we can watch the fire works from here as well!”
She pointed to the direction of clock town.
Kit could see the clock tower; he looked up and saw the first star of the evening. It shone beautifully. But what was even more beautiful was dear Cremia, sitting beside him, holding his furry hand.
He smiled.
They watched all the stars come out as the sun went down.
It was about 9:00 when Cremia finally spoke again.
“Kit…” she said. “Would you like to live here? With Romani and me? We could really use the extra help and I…”
She looked the other way.
“You what?” Kit asked.
“I…” she looked him in the eyes, and without saying another word, she kissed him.
This was a new experience for Kit; no one had ever kissed him like this.
It lasted about 5 minutes.
She pulled away and looked down.
“I’m sorry…”she said, almost crying.
“Sorry?” He said. “Don’t be sorry, that was beautiful. But why did you do that?”
“Well” Cremia began “when I first saw you, I felt something. Odd, like you were sent from the heavens to sweep me off my feet…
She blushed, as did kit.
“I, well, spending all this time with you, made me realize how alone me and Romani are, and I don’t want you to leave, I,”
She grasped his hand.
“I think I love you….”
Kit was stunned.
Cremia looked embarrassed.
Without saying a word, kit kissed her.
“I know I love you…”
He said.
She got up and tapped him on the shoulder.
“TAG!” She yelled, then giggled and climbed down the ladder.
Kit jumped off in front of the door and caught her, and then he held her close. She opened the door.
“What about the fire works? Won’t we miss them if we go inside?” He asked
“Well, if we go inside we could always make our own you know!”
Kit looked at her, looked down, then looked at the reflection on the sign beside the door; he looked at himself, then to her. "I’m ugly..." he thought. He then shed a tear, and ran away from her towards the gate of the ranch.
Cremia looked down, and began to sob.
BAM!
A colourful explosion lit up the night sky near the southern swamp.
Kit lay next to a large log. He watched the fireworks thinking nothing except Cremia.
“Why…” he asked himself. “Why would she love a monster like me?”
Another fire work shot off, then in front of him floated two balls of light, one bright yellow, another dark purple with a tinge of red.
Fairies!!!
“What??? Who are you?” He asked.
“My names Tatl!” The yellow one said.
“I’m Tael!” The purple one followed.
“And I’m.” A voice behind him almost startled him; he turned to see a scarecrow looking child.
“…I'm Skull kid!
Kit almost jumped.
“I, I'm kit.”
“You don’t look like a cat to me!” The skull kid replied.
“No, kit! K. I. T.! Kit!”
“Oh! Like a kitty!” The purple one said.
“Don’t be so rude Tael!” Tatl yelled
“I must apologize for my brother and friend here! But we are wondering why are you here all alone, shouldn’t you be at the carnival?”
Kit shrugged
“Oh, he’s sad!” Skull kid exclaimed. “Anything we can do to help?”
“Not unless you can make me human…” kit answered
“Why be human?” Tael asked.
“Because, I'm a monster!” Kit replied, then got up and walked away.
The fairies followed him
“You’re not a monster! A monster is a wolfos, or a like like, you’re not any of those!” Tatl said, trying to keep up with kits pace.
“Well look at me! I’m messed up! At least those monsters have names! I don’t even know what I am!”
Tatl sighed
“You’re cute.”
Tael looked at her
“What? You never call anyone cute sis! Except for that green clothed kid last ye...” Tatl smacked him.
“Sorry sis!”
“Anyways” Tatl continued. “Were outcasts, but where happy! Look at skull kid! He almost killed everybody last year!”
Skull kid frowned.
“Hey! That wasn’t my fault and you know it!!! Now, Kit, tell us why are you so upset?”
“Because I'm in love!!!!” He yelled, then kept walking.
“And I don’t need advice from two Christmas ornaments and a scarecrow!”
With that, he ventured to the beach.
“Well, we tried!” Tael said. “Let’s go to the carnival!”
“Damn Tael! Don’t be so cruel! We gotta help him!” Tatl began to follow Kit.
Skull kid and Tael stayed behind.
Kit was just about at his house when a yellow light illuminated his way.
“What do you want?” Kit yelled.
“I want to help you!” Tatl answered.
“Why? I don’t need help, I need to hide in my cave and never come out…”
“Look Kit! I don’t know you! But I know you’re in pain! And I want to help the best I can!”
“Look fairy! If I run out of candles, ill call you! Now leave me alone!”
Tatl began to shake with anger and annoyance.
“Fine if you don’t want any help, ill leave!”
She began to fly away when she heard a small whimper.
“Please… don’t leave me…” Kit curled up on the cold beach and looked at the stars.
He told Tatl the whole story.
“Whoa! Seems like you really like her!” She said.
“Yea.” Kit replied. “But I don’t have confidence in myself, she loves me, but my past is so dark and blurry, I don’t know or like myself!”
Tatl sighed.
“Look, if you really like her, and she likes you, nothing else matters! If she likes you, then that should be more than enough reason for you to love yourself! You’re not a monster! You are Kit! The one and only! And you have a wonderful girl alone probably crying for you at the ranch right now!”
Kit stood up and nodded.
“Don’t pass up a good thing Kit, go to her.”
Kit smiled and nodded again.
“Thanks Tatl, you’re a good fairy.”
Tatl kissed him on his cheek. “I try my best!”
It was about 3:30 AM
Cremia was still crying, she had been for the past 6 hours.
“Why… what did I do? Oh kit I thought you loved me!”
“I do.” He said.
She jumped and turned around. There was kit, standing in the doorway to her room.
She ran up to him and cried harder.
“Why did you leave? Was it me?”
“No” he answered. “No, I just needed to talk to someone. I needed to love myself before I could accept another.”
She smiled.
“I love you Kit! I always will, don’t ever leave me!”
“I wont.”
Cremia then kissed him.
As dawn approached, two Beings in Termina became one. The sun rose,
And for an hour, Kit and Cremia were not separate, they were one person.
The moon set, and the sun cast its light on the ranch, this was the first morning, of Kit’s life, his life on the ranch, with Cremia, Romani, and himself. For the first time in his life, he felt alive.
To be continued...
